17-222 Load Data Request

I posted this below in the "Small Stuff - 22s, 20s, and 17s" Subforum, but I really haven't gotten much response. I am trying to put together load data for the 17-222, specifically for the 20gr and 25gr bullets. There is limited published data for this cartridge and definitely nothing with any of the newer powders (last 10-15 years). I could use your help...any and all load recipes would be great. Things that would be useful are bullet weight, powder type & charge (specific weight or range), and primer type.

These are some of the load data that I found in my searches:

20gr Bullets
H335 20.5gr
Varget 22.0gr
8208XBR 21.0gr

25gr Bullets
H335 20.0gr - 21.0gr
TAC 21.0gr - 23.0gr
H4198 15.5gr (mild)
H4895 19.5gr - 20.5gr
N133 18.5gr - 19.2gr

Thanks!!!!!

From an old Hornady manual (vol. 2 / 1975 )you can add

25 grain HP / Winchester case / Remington 7 1/2 primer

3031 / 16.2gr - 18.3gr
4320 / 18.3gr - 22.2gr
760 / 22.4gr - 25.6gr
N204 / 22.7gr - 24.2gr

For that 4198 mild load you listed, Hornady list's

14.9gr - 16.5gr

Mine is a 17-223 and I'm using IMR 4895. 22.9 gr with 20 grain bullet. 4320 isn't made anymore but you will find something in this burning rate that will work. I still have some 4320 that I remember we used in a 17 Rem of my brother's. Gary

I don't know what other cartridges you load for where load data might be lacking, but this is an ideal case for using the program QuickLoad. Some might think it is an UN-necessary expenditure, but I feel it saves me $$ in components and barrel life.

Jeep2 - I agree that Quickload is a good tool that makes load development much easier.

There are plenty of shooters who still rely on lower tech solutions or who are just looking for a litmus test to verify that they haven't strayed too far off the designated path. I have been doing a deep-dive on a vintage Sako rifle, busily sorting out the case forming process. I thought why not go ahead and try to pull together/compile load data from various sources for posterity. The effort is really aimed at helping the next person who is interested in the cartridge.

And I totally agree with that step. I shoot a lot of 20P. I found there was quite a bit of load data available for the 32 gr bullets (but I didn't trust some of it), but very little for the heavier bullets. So I recorded everything I could find for 20P, 204 Ruger, and 223 with 40 gr bullets. The case capacities are close but larger. Then I made a list of all the powders I had experience with, and calculated loads (with adjusted Ba values) that would yield a 50K psi result. Then I shot them all, and recorded the actual velocities. Very close in many cases. Now I have a resource to use when I want to shoot 39/40 gr bullets in my 20P. Here is the summary.

Hey - That's a Nice Chart!!! Reloader OCD ... birds of a feather.

I have the same basic layout for the 17-222, including the data for the 17 Fireball and 17 Remington.

Thanks for everyone's help. I'll post this here and on Saubier.

Powders highlighted in yellow are either the exact same or clones.

As always these are just guidelines and all loads should be worked up slowly.
If you have access to QuickLoads then your load development can be more easily refined.
