168 gr palma rifle bullet

I have a new savage palma rifle with a short chamber can someone tell me of a bullet to use without having to stuff it in the case like I would have to with the sierra 168hpbt looking for a 168 gr for those really windy days and can some one tell me what I might get for a base to ogive spec with there bullet

I'll try and save you some time here; don't bother with the 168 in a Palma load, it won't work. The 168 SMK was designed as a 300 meter bullet, and Highpower shooters have pretty well proven (over, and over, and over and over again) that it won't stay supersonic out to 1,000. Not out of a 308, anyway. The 155s will do a better job for you, assuming you kick it up to around 2,950 fps or better (barrel length is your friend here). They'll also shoot inside the 168s on wind calls as well. The other option would be one of the various 175s. Most of these bullets were designed to correct the 168s shortcomings in the Long Range department.

+1 for 155s. Heavies work as well but the difference between a 155.5 correction at 1000 yds. vs. a 185 Jugg. correction is less than you think. For me it became all about recoil (I am a sling shooter), stayed more consistent throughout the day with lighter bullets. But I'm a pansy...

The new sierra tipped 168gr SMK is supposed to stay super sonic at 1000yds. Have not had to chance to get hands on any yet.

Kevin Thomas nailed it I have seen way too many 168 SMK come in the target at 1000 sideways just get some 155 2156 and be competitive .

I agree, run a 155.5 fullbore ~.015 off with enough Varget to make 2950 - 3000 and you'll have a winner compared to the 168 or 175 SMK.

nhhighpower,
If your barrel is at least a 1-13" twist. Try our 168 grain VLD TARGET if you want to stick with a 168 grain bullet. Our 155 VLD or Match long range BT target bullets. If you want to go heavier than the 168 try the 175 grain Long range BT target bullet. What is the actual twist rate of your barrel?

thank you all for your input my barrel is a 30inch 1/13 stock savage I only plan on shooting out to 600 yards at this time also any input on imr 8208 xbr powder would be great thanks

I absolutely agree. The new TMK is a complete redesign of the 168 Sierra and will work just fine at 1,000 yards. With the new pointier ogive it probably won't need to seat quite as deep in the case as the old ones.

UNLESS....the rules have changed, if shooting in a Registered Palma Match the requirement was to shoot the Sierra 155 gr. Palma bullet and especially so if it's an International Match! Been out of the game a while so I wouldn't be surprised now if no rules exist at all since the trend is to not offend someone!!

The 155 rule only applies to Fullbore Matches.
The Berger 168H can be shot in the same throat as a 155. For the .050" throat in my old barrel the difference between the Berger 155H and the 168H seated .030" out and measured to the ogive with a Hornady Comparator was only .005"
New barrel was throated at .090" so I can shoot the Berger Juggernaut when desired.
The Berger 168 at 2920fps will buy you about 2" over the 155H at 3030fps at 1000 yds in a 5mph full value wind. Enough to take you from a wide 9 to an honest 8.

Wolley, You are right on the money. Though the 168 H gyroscopic stability factor out of a 1:13 twist is a bit lower than some recommend, it seems to shoot just fine at the velocities you mention out to 1000, in the same rifle the OP is using. Seymour
