168 AMAX for deer

Has anyone had success with these on medium,Texas sized) deer? I'm loading them with 46 grn Varget from a 20" barrel PSS LTR. Its pushing them to about 2700 FPS. I've started loading them short enough to cycle smoothly from the magazine. Loading .0015 off the groves It was holding sub 1/2 MOA. I'd like to be able to use the same loading for game that I practice with. Any input is welcome.

I've had so so expierence with the 168 AMAX bullets, Hornady desined the bullet for competition shooting, however I've managed to kill 2 deer with them, BUT I don't recommend them. But if shooting for the neck or head u shouldn't have a problem.

I hunt in Lee County,TX,Giddings)where are u at?

Take a look at Combined Technologies, I believe they make a 168gr Ballistic Silver tip, pretty darn accurate/hunting bullet. They are higher in price though. Just buy the PSP Core-Lokts if your not shooting farther than 300yds.

Take a look at Hornady's SST's and Interbonds.

The A-max is a very good bullet for deer, even the light weight 75 grain has put a lot of deer in the back of a truck, and quit a few hogs also.
I'll be the first to bet a 168 grain Amax that double lungs a deer of any size will
put them down within sight..........

I'm glad to hear that. I hunt west of San Antonio and West of Fort Worth. Last years deer was 207# live weight. I shot him with a 180grn Lapua Ballistic tip. He only went about 50 yards after a double lung shot.

The Amax is a paper puncher and was not designed to work on game animals. TX deer deserve a good bullet - in the 30 cal Hornady line the Hornady SST would be a good choice - even a Remington CLPSP would be a far better choice.

The people that discount the Hornady A-max as a non viable hunting bullet havn't used it at all I'll bet.
I've seen to many of them punch through good sized Texas hog's to have any doubts
about there hunting abilitys...........
Lots of deer also.......
And we won't even talk about the accuracy they deliver.

Gentleman

I have a fair amount of experance with this bullet at all ranges on whitetail & Mule deer. Only one needed an extra slug, but im not totaly conviced at this point that He wasnt going down already.

My closest shot was 136 Yards in October of this year on A Wyoming Muley & the Longest shot was Also this November on a bedded Whitetail doe at 796 yards. Over the last 7 years most of my shots have been around the 300 yard range & the bullet has performed flawlessly. Intrestingly enough the closest shot is the only one that took two rounds. Ive never had to take more than one shot using a hart lung shot placement.,Minus the one)

The two calibers that I us are a 7mm Rem Mag & 280 Ackley so they are very close in performance with the rem Mag having the slight edge of 2973FPS at 10 ft off the crown.

Now my freind who shoots more deer in one year than most people shoot in ten has had some poor luck with the 155 A max on a slower 30 cal. but the extra speed in my opinion is what is the diference not to mention the bullet shape is way diferent from the 7mm to the 30 cal.

Go forth to the hunting feild with confidence with the 162 A-max as it is a proven performer.

OOps

sorry I misread the thread about wich A- max you are using 30 cal not the 162gr 7mm I was raving about. My freind, who will remain anoumonus) has had better luck with the 168 A max,vs 155 A-Max) but in his 300 win mag & that is what He & I beleave will make or break the A-MAX. Of course deer have been killed with the little 22LR if put it in the right place. In my book bullet placement is EVERYTHING no matter what bullet you use.

Does anybody else have other results out there using the A-max?
Im currios to find what others are doing & what Velocities they are having good & bad luck at with this bullet.

Hope you all enjoy your time in the feild.
