162 A-max

Have any of you ever loaded the 7mm 162 gr. A-max? I'm going to try some in my 7 RSAUM for long range work and was wondering about seating depth, jump or seat into the lands.
Thanks

Just seat them to where the bearing surface of the bullet is above the donut area of the neck and shoot them. They like to jump! A friend of mine is doing the very same thing and his load is holding 5 inches of elevation at 1K, shooting prone with a sling.

I'm shooting the 162 AMaxes out of a 284 in a DTA SRS chassis. Don't know how they'll shoot out of a larger case at higher velocities, especially since I'm running them at only 2700fps with 53.5grs of H4831, in an effort to avoid perforating steel targets at a friend's range. I did try them at 2972fps with RL-17 out of the same rifle, but wasn't pleased with the accuracy.

However, they hammer with the lighter load, and as Froggy mentioned, they shoot well when jumped. I'm using the 162s out to 600, then switching to JLK 168s or Berger 180 Hybrids out to 1400yds, so the slower load with 162s is not much of a liability, even if the wind kicks up.

Thanks guys. I'd been using the Sierra 175's because they held better elevation at 1,000 than the Berger 180 VLDs that I had tried. If you believe the numbers the A-max will shoot inside the Sierras at the same velocity so I thought I'd give them a spin. By the way Froggy, I found my spotter. Apparently it fell out of my duffel bag and slid under the seat in the truck. I now have it pinned to the wall in the shop. My only trophy from the Nationals :( By the way, I'm still impressed with the 449 out of the .223 tube gun, good job!

Thank you Sir and your words are truly appreciated! It is good to hear that you found the spotter and now have it on the wall, I was worried that it got washed with the clothes! Let me know how well those 162's work, I would very interested I reading your results!

Took the 223 out yestereday after building new targets for the State Championships in two weeks, the barrel was absolutely clean. Took five shots to get it to settle down and then proceeded to a 99-8X and the 9 I let happen I purpose, I saw the wind shift and wanted to see without making a correction what that mirage was worth! We didn't have any of the flags up.

When I was shooting the 284 and a 7RSAUM. The bullet I was using was the Sierra 175 as well. I think that between the 180's, 175's and the 162's, you might see maybe no more than 1/2 moa difference respectively. So in essence, with the 162's you may see the 162's being maybe 3/4 moa out from the 180's. So with the right bracket of the wind, both will shoot a clean, just may see a little
higher X count with the heavier bullet, but is the increase of recoil worth the couple of extra X's?

Yep, the 200-11X just didn't cut it that day :( I'm out of bullets and needed to order some more and thought about the 162s. I consider the elevation more important than the bullet BC. If the 162s will hold elevation then I'll worry about the windage. Where I get hurt most is when the wind changes while I'm on the gun so hopefully the A-max will give me just a little more help there. Besides the price is much better than the Bergers. Good luck in the State Championship in a couple weeks! Keep them 90's going in the X ring! I'll need to defend my NC LR championship next month and I already feel the big dogs chewing on my rear!!!

Yeah, you know how Mudcat has been shooting here lately! Hope that you string em all in the middle!

As for the 162's holding good dispersion, I don't think you will have a problem there. Phil was holding awesomely yesterday, the majority of his shots held 5 inches and the extreme was 8 inches from top to bottom of his grouping. So I say get some and go for it!

The 162's shoot well at 1000 and the price is right. I've put approximately 1600 thru my straight .284 in F-open the past several years... weigh them/sort them and put them just off, say 3 thou. and with the right conditions they easily hold between the X & mid-10. IMO the extra speed they give you off-sets the lower BC. when compared to the 180's, IMO. Eric in DL

Hard to argue the price point where the 162 AMaxes are concerned. Not sure why they didn't shoot as well as the JLK 168 VLDs when pushed to approx. the same 2945fps with RL17, but since Steve discontinued his 168s, I'll have to see if the Berger 168 (nearly identical) will shoot as well as the JLKs have. I shot out to 1400yds with the JLKs, and was impressed with both the vertical & wind on them.

Noted that Bryan Litz commented on how uniform the Hornady 162s were when he compared lots that were made 11yrs apart (IIRC). His G7 BC for them is .307, while that of the Berger 168 VLD is .316 - not a whole lot of difference.
