160gr 6.5mm bullets???

I have heard of these 160gr. bullets and even seen stats for them but none for sale or anyone advertising that they have any.

Are they real? Are they any good for long range?

Check out the Hornady # #2640 if you can find any. Could be some gun shop might still have a few on their shelf or in a back room. Might still be able to get some from Norma although it might be a 156 gr. bullet. I have exactly one of those Norma's left and I think it was 160 gr.
It has always bugged hell out of me that these companies bean counters alway drop what I want most. Take Sierra for example. They haven't made their 170 gr. 7MM bullet for years now and it's one of my all time favorites. At least Hornady still makes some 175's but nobody in town carries them and getting them to special order some is like pulling hen's teeth. I don't think Speer ever made a 160 gr. RN and it's no longer shown in the latest Sierra manual. I know they did make them at one time.
All we can do at this point in time is write and cmpain and if enough write in, maybe, just maybe they might make a limited run or two so we can keep some of these old timers shooting.
What you can do is scrounge the gun shows looking for the bullets you need. I found three boxes of those 170 gr. Sierras a few years back for $10 a box. The guy thought I was nuts for buying them. Said they couldn't be pushed fast enough. Silly boy. ::) Sorry I can't be more help.

I asked about the 155's at one point...

I don't know if he still makes them but Forum Member GLC was testing them in a 6.5RSAUM last year. I'd never heard of them before that but I think he discussed his results in a post.

I tried to find 160gr. bullets a few months ago for a military rifle Silhouette competition, I had trouble knocking down the rams at 500 meters with a 6.5x55 Mauser. The only ones I found had poor B.C.s, the match 140's had much higher kinetic energy after 500 meters than any of the 160's.

Hello All
I have a sizeable quantity of Bob's 155 vld, I gave up with the 6.5 saum in favour of the 7 saum as even with a relatively low velocity the 7mm was king.
A friend of mine shoots the 155vld in. 6.5mm/270 wsm and they shoot really well however the barrel gets extremely hot even after 5-6 shots, his conclusion was "not a cartridge for F class.
However we have tested this bullet to 1400 yards and it was consistent in the wsm config, my Saum much preferred the 140 grain bullets.

I have a couple boxes of 3 hornady and 2 sierra if anybody wants to try them? email me

If anyone wants to see a picture of my 155gr VLD 6.5
just send me an email. I don't know what the BC is but its about as long as a 7mm 180VLD.
Some of the UK shooters use them in a 270WSM case necked down to 6.5. I believe they are using 1in8 twist barrels. The bullet is almost 1-1/2" long.
Hope this info helps. bccoemail-misc@yahoo.com

I SPENT A LITTLE FORTUNE FOR 2 BOXES OF OLDER 160 GRAIN NORMA BULLETS LAST YEAR TO SHOOT THE ORIGINAL WEIGHT IN A 6.5X55 SWEDE IN A CLUB COMPETITION THAT NEVER HAPPENED.Sorry caps lock on again.

1-8" will work fine. The Hornady 160gr RN is not any longer than the 140gr AMAX and 139gr Lapua.

The Hornady and Sierra 160gr. can be extremely accurate in a good rifle (m96, m41b) at shorter distances. They are not so great at distances over 300m or so and in heavy wind.

Actually 1 in 10 will do it.The swedes are 1 in 10 and the original bullet is 160 grains.

I always thought that the original standard bullets were a 10.1 gm roundnose and a 9.1gm spitzer??
PO Ackley mentions testing 160-200 gn bullets in 7" twist and a "special" 5 1/4 twist for 200gn Barnes .... must have looked like a bayonet when loaded ???

This would only be for long range Fclass and practice so round nose isnt an option.

Catskinner says he makes some 160gr rebated boattail 6.5mm bullets. I would like to hear a little more about them if anyone has any experience with them.
