142grn smk

Can anyone recommend a load for the 6.5x55 Swedish Mauser using 142grn SMK's with H4350. This is for a original Mauser so pressure is an issue. I can't seem to find a load for it on the Hodgdon site. What OAL would you recommend also.

Cheers

I copied this off the ADI website who make H4350 which is sold in Australia as AR2209. The data is for a 140gr projectile but would still be ok for the 142. Can't help you on a good load as I don't shoot the Swede but this will give you a starting point.

140gr AR2209 24" min 39.5,2418fps)- max 44.0,2617fps)

Somewhere around 45 grains of H4350 should do you good!

COL 3.15, if that doesn't work length it out some more.

You'll have a loose chamber, so I doubt you'll be able to go much if at all beyound 45 grains.

WOrk up to it and watch for an accuracy node.

I don't use that powder, but I do shoot the Swede's a lot, military and modern. I never got the 142 to work well for me with the long throat, the 140 worked better in my mil surps, with the Hornady A-Max right along with it. My preferred powders are 4831 SC and R-22

Stewie333, You can trust Excercion's advice. He did pretty well with his 6.5x55 at the FCNC. I was even thinking of one for my next build after talking to hom.

A departure from that artillery piece of yours Bolo? This I want to see :) Actually I'm planning to take a page from your book by adding some weight to the bottom of my stock to see if that changes the way it rides the bags.

He said H4350...its not my choice for that caliber and bullet either.

I perfer VIN N560 and then Reloader 22 in that order. Russian Primer on Lapua brass.

I love the Swede.

I have been using 120gr Speers with an OAL of 3.085" and 43grns of H4350 with abysmal results so I figured I would jump up to the 142grn SMK's. Hi Exercion and rhino, the H4350 is supposed to be a good powder, why do you not recommend it? I have also considered the 139grn Lapua Scenars. Might these work better?

Thanks for the replies.

Stewie,
Most of my shooting with the Swede has been target work. I started with the military rifles, and still shoot and love them) and with the long throats in them, the longer 140gr bullets were recommended to me and having run through a few thousand, I like them alot. In the same vein, the slow powders seem to work better with the long barrel and heavy bullets. The velocity is up there, and accuracy is too. I always chuckle when I see the "magnum" on the label of a can of R-22 when I'm pouring it into the little swede case. Anyway, I started with the faster ball powders, thinking they'd meter better for me, but found high pressure indicators with the long barrel. I did go to R-19 if memory serves,my notebook isn't handy) when loading for the 120gr Speer, but that's as fast a powder as I've used in a long time.
Another thing I like about the slow powders is that the case is pretty much filled up once you seat the bullet and I have read that %of case fill is a contributor to accuracy. In my Remington-actioned F-Class gun the powder is H4831SC, and it is a very slight compressed load. In the military long barreled rifles it's 46g of R-22,This is ok in my gun, unsure about yours). I think I'd try the 4350 with a light bullet, maybe 100 to 120gr and see how it does. I'm going to have to dig up the notes now, because I remember the 120gr load I had to be very accurate in my M41b.
