140g Amax performance out of a 6.5-47 Lapua

I found some 6.5mm 140g Amax bullets so I figured I would buy some and try them out of my new 6.5-47 Lapua. I actually haven't got the rifle from the smith yet. It's a Stiller TAC 30 and a Bartlein 5R 8.5 twist finished at 24". I bought some H4350 and I have some RL15. I read a lot of reviews on Berger, Lapua and Sierra bullets, but haven't found anything on the Hornady Amax bullets our of a 6.5-47L. Thanks

Some people look at case size and say they're too big for the 6.5 lapua, but there are plenty of people running the 140 class bullets with great success. I have a stash of them as well and as soon as my rl17 gets here I'll be trying to join that second group. H4350 will work nicely as well. If you Google search 6.5 lapua 140 amax you'll find all sorts of info.

Considering the case capacity of the 6.5x47, I believe you'll find the 123 to be much more to your liking

I shoot a lot of the 140 Amax's in my 8 twist 6.5x47 Lapua AI rifle with H-4350 and it does a good job.
The 140 grain VLD's will do just as well, never got around to shooting anything lighter because of the way the heavy's shoot in that rifle..
My mentor kids girl friend shoots one built the same with the 140 Hornady SP, and she does well with them too.
The other one likes the 130 Accubonds......
I have no clue why some rifles will not shoot them as good as these 3 do.....

Can I ask what kind of velocities you are getting with the 140 Amaxes please?

I don't shoot amaxes but I shoot 140 Bergers and I get about 2850 with H4350 and a 26" barrel.

I have also never shot anything lighter in mine like Preacher. I have shot 4" groups at 1k and low1"s at 600 with mine.

Thanks guys. I hope my rifle is done by the end of the week. I was gonna have the barrel finished at 24", but changed my mind last second. I called the smith yesterday morning and asked him to finish it at 26" instead. The reamer I gave him is a no turn neck and .170" freebore. It's plenty deep for 123 grain to 140 grain bullets. The bullets I have is 123g Amax, 123g Scenars and 140g Amax. The powders I have is Varget, RL15, RL17, H4350 and IMR4350. I will post how it does and some pics. Thanks.

The 140gr amaxs like around 40grs of H4350 and 39grs plus of Rel 17.
I'm currently using 41.5grs of RS62 and at current temps here in the UK 2720fps from a 24 inch barrel

My previous barrel was 26 inches and had a slightly long freebore and I think the 140gr amaxs were doing around 2800fps.
Incidentally in my new barrel I use 140gr berger hybrids on exactly the same load and base to ogive exactly the same measurement and they shoot really well.. the same as the amaxs at 100yds but better at range.

Off the top of my head the amaxs are jumping between 10 and 20 thousandths. Stunning accuracy at 100yds..

Give the 136gr Lapua's at try after all Lapua did design the case. They shoot better than the Berger's in my rifle with H4350.
