139 Scenar

Has anyone ordered any Lapua 139 naked scenars lately? I've ordered some bullets and came in the new blue box and after loading some old box type and continued on with my loading and ran out and opened the new blue box all looked well. I loaded 6 up before I thought I'd better check to see if all is good and well the bolt handle wouldn't close unless forced.. Not good!
So I measured several loaded rounds and noticed that I had to seat the new bullets an additional .044 deep.
Is anybody else seeing this?

tbeasley,
Anytime you change lots of bullets, powder, brass, ect there is a potential for change.
This week maybe Lapua is making 139s on this machine and next week it is making 185s,the following week back to the 139s but maybe a different setup man set the machine up a little different, there still within specs so they get shipped out, there is your .044 Sorry just the way it is.

The reality is, if the new ones shoot well, what's the difference whether they need to be seated somewhere different than a prior lot of bullets?

I don't see that what you are observing is any different than what you see with other premium bullet manufacturers lot to lot variances. In truth, the dies for bullet making wear out now and again, and they need to use new ones and there are manufacturing tolerances on tools and dies, so the new ones are typcally never the same as the old ones (typically reasonably close but not the same). Additionally, if you have a milder throat angle (like a one and a half degree throat angle or less), you only need a very small difference in the ogive of the new lot of bullets to change where it hits the lands by a fair amount.

Load them up and shoot them and see what you get on the target.

It's a very long bullet, and so possible for 44thou of variance OAL. But I don't see how your seater could put bullets 44thou closer to the lands..
I mean, maybe if switching from secant to tangent ogives. But if the ogives are the same type? So much change is hard to imagine.

Robert Whitley, and Donald Dunlap are correct, but I work for a large bullet and cartridge manufacturer. The dies for there machines are nothing like what you use on your rcbs rockchucker. They (the dies) are made by the 1000 on cnc machines and are very close to the same. The problem is, friday night all the setup man and the operator of the machine can think about is drinking beer, fishing, hunting, anything but what he is suppose to be doing. Now the dies and other parts wear out but its there job to keep it within tolerances. If most of you knew how most bullets were made you would be amazed they are as good as they are. This is why we buy in large lots for our compitition rifles so the bullets we have are close to the same.
