110Barnes TTSX -270 Win report

Just got back from opening week of Michigan deer season. Got to try the 110 gr TTSX on a 200# x 8 point. Distance was short-only 150 yds. Deer was dead before it hit the ground. Actually, it literally slammed it into the ground. Massive tissue destruction with bullet running 3550 fps out of the muzzle. Impressive performance. Made me think that I was shooting a 300.

Yeppers! I shoot two loads one with win 760 at 3350 and the other with R17 at 3550, so fast and flat shooting that you think that you are shooting a 220 swift!

Larry, I am getting ready to load some 110 TTSX's in Nosler brass for my .270, did you stick with the RL-17 as per your thread? What brass did you use? Glad to hear it all worked out for you!

Has anybody checked the muzzle velocity using Re17 powder? I have used the 110 TSX bullet in both my 270 Win and 270 Weatherby and 3550 seems pretty optimistic in the Winchester even though I know it is a published load. I settled on H4350 in the 270 as it gave 1/2 moa groups in my ancient Model 70. It seems like Re 17 was running around 1.5 moa which is still within my specs for a deer hunting rifle. Tom

Yeppers! I used an Ohler 35P and the load is also listed in the barnes reloading manual available on line.

Thanks Keith. I might have to play with Re-17 a little more to see if I can find a little better group in my 270. I have been shooting the TSX and might buy a box of the tipped ones. I was using the tipped 130 grainers in my 270 Weatherby to tell the difference between them and the 110 grain bullets. Tom

Sorry for the delay answering as I just got back again from deer hunting. I'm using RL-17 @59grs which is a top charge so start accordingly. My chro velocity was 3568 on the 1st segment & 3562 on the 2nd. I could get almost 3500 with IMR4350 BUT recoil & blast were substantially higher. I'm using Nosler brass neck trued to .013. Accuracy is good & certainly better than needed for hunting. I normally shoot base of the neck or center of the neck at the shoulder junction. This is a DRT shot with pretty much anything. We culled a couple does this weekend, live weight 140-150#, shooting them slightly lower quartered to in front of the shoulder exiting behind the opposite shoulder. All were DRT with massive heart, lung destruction. Even the spine/shoulder bullets exit with a large wound. Both the 4350 & RL-17 groups were sub 3/4" and sub 2" at 300yds with 10x hunting glass. It will do better but that's average for this load.

I'm shooting them thru a Shilen 10 twist which is pretty much standard for the 270. My GUESS is that an eleven twist or 10.5 would probably be excellent. The 10's tend to shoot 140 gr bullets the very best BUT they run 3" more drop at 300 yds vs the 130 gr bullets. The 110's at 1" high @100 are dead nut at 300 yds. About as flat as you can get to 300.

Larryh128, I'm a big .270 win fan. any time there is something new for the old .270 i have to try it. But a 110 TTSX has a BC of .377 and even at 3,500FPS one inch high at 100yrds its -4.6 inches low at 300yrds..so i dont know where you are shooting but i would like to know.
Now the berger 150VLD leaving my 24" .270 win barrel at 3,050FPS 1" high at 100yrds is only -5.9 inch low at 300yrds and hits just so much harder.
Allthough i will admit after looking over the numbers through the sierra infinty program, that 110 looks decent.
I would be interested in hearing more about it.

I am not sure about all the parameters in Quick-load but when I put in 59 grains of Re-17 with a 110 grain TSX bullet it shows well over the maximum pressure. I am not saying that 59 grains is not a safe load but be careful. Like I say, I might have something wrong in my Quickload set-up. The 110 grain bullets have been deadly for me in both the 270 Win and 270 Weatherby. My load for accuracy is 57.5 grains of H4350 and Quickload shows that about maximum and 3200 fps. That is also the max charge for Re-17 the way I am entering it in Quickload with 3350 fps. These are values for a 22" barrel. I cannot find any notes that I tried Re-17 as the H4350 was so accurate that I was probably satisfied. I will try Quickload with the 100 grain Barnes bullet with the published load and see how it compares to the Barnes on-line manual's velocity. Tom

59 grs is a published load on the Alliant site. They might be using a different bullet BUT in my rifle there are no pressure signs. As to quick load figures, I don't know what to tell you. Target at 100 yds, 1" high from sighting point. Target at 300 yds within 1" from sighting point. I trust that more than a computer program.
