110 SMK or 115 DTAC RBT

Just got back from range here in Reno. I shot the 110 MK and the 107 MK out of Bartlein 8" twist . H4350 from 40.7 to 41.7 12 rounds total per bullet. I was in a rush and I think the 107s are a tad better by a whisker at 100 yards. OAL seating of the 110 was 2.860 ,loaded ammo looks cool. BC of 107 is .527 and BC of 110 is .617 . It that difference, of great significance ?

It's a very significant difference in Palomino and desert winds.

Tubbs says on his site that the new DTAC with rebated boat tail is designed to work with 8" twist. I can't guarantee you it will work, you'll want to contact Tubbs for that.

Shooting the new DTAC 115's (BN coated) in my 8 twist 26" Creedmoor barrel. Finished up load development with a little hunting and like the results. Need to take it out past 700 yards to finalize my DOPE. During initial load development I was shooting out to 1400 yards before the barrel settled down. The BC is suspiciously high so I need to do a final distance confirmation before I accept it. If it's true then I'm extremely happy.

I think I'll throat my newest 6mm Competition Match barrel out for these. I still have about 4000 or more of the pointed ones.

Contacted Tubbs today. They let me buy a 100,decided on the naked bullets. Clerk said the coated bullets would alter the bbl a little bit for when I shoot other bullets ??

I've shot both from a 6 Dasher. I was real excited about the 110's but couldn't get them to shoot consistently; 7 twist. Same problem as JGorski. Always have a flyer or two. Tried them out of my new barrel, 7.5", and they also didn't shoot well. Hybrids shoot great, consistently, out of those two barrels. I switch to DTACs when the throat grows and Hybrids sit too far out in the neck. They shoot almost as well as the Hybrids and are consistent. I find the BC doesn't pan out to the advertised .620 for me but are still very competitive. The really nice thing about them is that they breathe new life in an aging barrel. I keep Hybrids and DTACs in stock and rotate them thru barrels as the barrels age and are retired.

Another thing you might want to consider when picking your bullet is it's form factor for loading and seating in mags(if you do that). The SMK has a short bearing surface and a very long nose. Because of this you will need a very short freebore if you plan on chasing lands. The long nose eats up mag space quickly. I couldn't load them close to the lands with a BR mag kit out of a Dasher! You will also run the length of your neck quicker than a bullet like the DTAC which has a more conventional shape (excluding the RBT). It has a longer bearing surface so you have more flexibility seating in depth. My chambers' FB isn't designed for the DTAC very well initially, but the throat grows into a good length for the bullet after .040" erosion. Because of its longer bearing surface I can run it out for a while.

I've come to appreciate other attributes of bullets other than BC as I focus on building a load that performs consistently for as much of the barrel life as possible. I have been really put off wasting barrel life by re-developing loads after 500rds or so.

^^^^Yeah, like the 115 Bergers used to do in my 6x47 barrel from years ago. That was a total PITA. Switching to the old DTACS, then the hybrids, made life so much easier.

I've owned several 6XC rifles and have shot new and old DTACs, plain and HBN coated and have gotten really great results out of my 8 twist Bartlein and Kreiger barrels. I run them right at 3000 fps, H4350, norma and resized palma brass, variety of primers (although 450s in the palma work best). Getting ready to chamber a 7.5 Kreiger in 6XC and try the 110 JLKs.
