105gr Hornady HPBT Match vs 105gr Berger VLD Match

The preferred load for my rifle (bought used, previous owner's recipe) is 30.2gr Varget, 105gr VLD 10 thousandths off the lands, CCI 450 primer and Lapua brass. I bought a box of the Hornady bullets but haven't used them yet. They have a higher G1 BC than the Bergers (.530 vs .493) so I'm hoping they do well. I think I read somewhere that the Hornady bullets generally like to be jammed into the lands, but can't remember for sure. Should I just try my present load recipe or start at the lands and work back? Thanks in advance.

I am running them about 5 thou jam. I wouldn't go off their advertised bc, they inflate it. If you wanna try something with a higher bc then the Berger Hybrid is the way to go with a bc of .547. The Hornady's so shoot good but I am switching to the Hybrids.

I have been shooting them in HP competition at mid-range and they are very good bullets. They have a longer bearing surface than the 105 BVLD and appear to be tolerant of "jump" They shot right with the Bergers in my tests.

I think the BC of the Hornady is overstated. It sure appears that way to my eyes at least.

Have you tried the Berger 105 Hybrid. I used to shoot the VLD Hunting exclusively in my BRX and Tried the Hybrid. I jumped the VLD .030 with 33.2 Grains of Varget and found the sweet spot for the Hybrid at 33.7 gr Varget and .020 off the lands. The Hybrid has a shorter bearing surface and the .5 gr increase gave me the same speed as the VLD. I've been shooting 600 yd matches pretty much all year with great results and shot my first 2x1000 yd match last Sunday with a pair of 194's for the day. The BC of the Hybrid is .547. No complaints here.

2 cents............

If you really want to find out which one flies better in your rifle, simply make a few rounds of same formula each, and just replace the projectile, Hndy 105, Bgr 105 Match BT, 105 VLD, and 105 Hybrid.

Whichever prints higher, again, using the same formula, is the winner.

From there on you would have to repeat the test and shoot for groups to see which one actually prints smaller. You can tweek (OAL, powder weight/primer combination) the best grouping ones to see how much smaller you can get them.

You might be impressed with the results.
