105 vld prairie dog

Anyone used the Berger 105 vlds on prairie dogs? Target or hunting type? How did they compare to say a vmax or ballistic tip? Thanks

Only in an attempt to make the VHA 500 or 1000 yard clubs. They can skip a long way and they do not explode in contact. I like V-Max and BT's better.

Bert,

I discoverd the same thing with JLK's. When I switched to Ballistic Tips the little buggars blew up clear out to 325 yards from a .223.

Tried using a 6.5mm 140gr Berger VLD on a couple prairie dogs at 250 yards once. They didn't blow up half as bad as with my .204 Ruger using a 34gr HP bullet. So my assumption is that it went right through 'em.

Bergers are definitely more of hunting style bullet that give good penetration. I've shot 12 big game animals with the 6.5mm 140gr Berger Target VLD with awesome results. Not the best results on prairie dogs if you like to see them die in more graphic manner : )

I've used the 105 hunting VLD in a 6-284 and 95 hunting VLD in a 6br. It has already been stated but they do not produce dramatic effect. They just go right through and p dog falls over dead, fully intact.

Thanks for the info. I would hate to get into a dog town and be disapointed with bullet performance.

So what sends the dogs into the air the best in a 6mm? The 105 amax or the 87 vmax? I am looking for a destructive bullet that will buck the wind. I have shot a bunch of 55 gr ballistic tips and 50 gr vmax in .223 and .22-250 very destructive. With a new 6br build in the works just need to get the right varmint bullet.

If you take me to shoot with you at your dog town, I'll tell you which bullet to use : ) Hahaha! Just Kidding.

87 gr Hornady V-Max would be extremely devastating with it's lighter jacket designed for varmints and faster velocity than the 105 gr A-Max. And having a BC of .400, it will fly well in the wind too.

The 70 gr Sierra BK is extremely explosive as well, but BC is not that high. Of course the added velocity from using an even lighter bullet may compensate for that.

Most of what I've read on the computer and seen on youtube the 105's have mainly been used for punching paper not hunting. Some great groups out to 1000 yards in .243

The 105 VLD launched at 3000 fps will leave you crawlers, even at 100 yards. The 87 VMAX will yield more spectacular results. I turned a prairie dog inside out at 720 yards when launched at 3200 fps. I use the 105 VLDs for big game now. The 87 is perfect for prairie dogs to antelope and of course...coyotes!

Well i guess the only other question is what powder to use with the 87 vmax in a 6 br? I appreciate the info guys.

Berger's VLD bullet is one of the best hunting bullets available on the market. The Target and Hunting VLD both work very well in any caliber suitable for big game.

I agree, I use the VLD bullets in both my deer rifles, .243 & .270, just not the 105's.

55-60g varmint 6mm going 3500+ = most chunks getting the most air you've ever seen. So easy to do in a 6BR it should be illegal. ;)
