105 Vld Jamming?

I've never been much on jamming since I've always hunted with my loads also and didn't want not to be able to eject a loaded round. Times are changing. Started playing with seating depth and getting good consistent results. Loading a 6br 1 in 8" twist with Berger 105 VLD. Jammed as far as .015 into the lands and was surprised that I was able to remove loaded round without it "sticking". Can definitely see rifling marks clearly on the bullet. How far can I expect to be able to go before running into problems? Am loading for benchrest so I'm not concerned if I need to fire to unload.

I find when I have even square land marks I'm about 20 in. As to when trouble will start, depends on neck tension also.

I'm curious why you feel you need to jam VLD's. I've been shooting the target, hunting, and the hybrids for 3 yrs now and depending upon the bullet used, they are jumped anywhere from .010 to .030 from the lands in my Brx. Maybe this info about VLDs from Berger will shed some light on the subject.

Read the VLD section.

I don't yet know what I "need" to be doing. Just trying different options to find the sweet spot and thought I would get opinions from you folks. Jamming is uncharted water for me, and opinions like yours, and others doesn't show me the exact way, but makes the muddy water a little clearer. Thanks for the web address. I read something similar to that and will experiment with it. I guess, as always, the gun will have the final say on what "it" needs. 100yd 3 shot groups, 6 groups total, .050 .010 .015 jammed so far have been in the 2's and mid 3's. .020, a good place to quit. I felt I was getting close. Thanks all, for the advise. Can never have too much.

Depends on how sharp the lands are and your neck tension.

Those bullets shoot the best for me just touching the lands.

How hard you can safely jam (for ejection purposes only) depends on the neck tension you are running. With lots of neck tension you can jam them pretty deep and still eject them. With very little tension you won't even be able to jam them very deep...the lands will push the bullet deeper into the case.

As far as the question "I'm curious why you need to jam VLD's"...

The answer.......I LIKE TO SHOOT SMALL GROUPS!! ;)

I use the 105 hunting VLD in my Dasher, shooting it right on the lands is what worked best in that gun.

I went from 20k off to 20k in in 10k incraments. Right on the lands is what end up working the best.
