1035 yard bear

Heck of a job! Nice bear. Well done.

I recall being a kid and shooting a bb gun. Whacking barn sparrows at 15 feet. Then my buddy got a Weihrauch pellet rifle. He started popping starlings at 50 and 60 yards. I got a RWS 45.

I started whacking starlings at 50 yards.

I learned that with practice, good equipment, repeated success I could confidently produce good results much better than I ever did before.

The same thing happened when I moved from a 22 to a 222. Then from a 222 to a 22-250. Again when I went to heavier bullets, fast twist, better scopes, range finders, wind flags, benches, tripods, BIG-eyes, etc etc.

So when I shot three deer (625, 547 and 331 yards) with my 7mm mag, all one shot, and the 331 yard one was a called left eyeball...it was because I spent a lifetime improving my skills, killing a pile of groundhogs (over 700 off one farm over 27 years) and the PD in Oklahoma.

But I still can't shoot a bow farther than 15 yards worth a poop!

Never had one get away, or crippled one and had it get away, may have had to take more than one shot. I'm not saying it doesn't happen to some, I'mView attachment 1412482 only speaking of myself and the group I hunt with. we always have a backup shooter incase of a bad hit. Ten shot group at 1000 yards perfect score of 100, 4.275" group.View attachment 1412484
Man, that looks like a GREAT DAY........Hanging out with friends with all those " Big Eyes" set up, hunting a far-away hillside.......Nice Williamsport HG target.
Nice shot on the bear with an AWESOME cartridge choice..........I am a little jealous here...

Regards
Rick

Imo, this shot is more ethical than most hunters banging away at 100 yds on running deer. This Hunter has obviously put in the time, effort, and experience to make this shot. Just because most cannot do this does not mean it is unethical. Most people are just to lazy to put in the time and effort required to make a shot like this. It really is that simple. Again, this is just my personal opinion. Congrats on a great shot!

I want to thank everyone for their comments both negative and positive. long range hunting isn't for everyone, I understand that. I've been shooting long range since the 70's, it took hours and hours and thousands of rounds at the range shooting in the worst weather to learn the effects that wind, light, humidity and temperature have on the trajectory of the bullet and in the field shooting at rocks at varying ranges in difficult conditions, to become proficient. Not to mention the hours spent at the reloading bench and the monetary expense involved.

What would happen if at the next 1000 yard F-class match the rules were no sighters
allowed just shoot for score?
That`s why a sniper/sharpshooter practices and records his Cold bore shot. I have seen these type of shots taken many times by skilled shooters and result in terminal effects. Just because you can`t or won`t doesn`t mean wjm is wrong to do so. So lighten up ,I doubt this harmless thread will last til sundown. Jeff

wjm, Nice shot. As they say"That ain`t your first rodeo". Your setup reminds me of the long range setups on Seven Mountains area at the border of Centre Co. and Mifflin Co. Those shooters shoot across a reservoir, I`m not sure of the distance but I think it is over a grand. They use a recovery team on the far side to locate the kill and confirm. Anyway enjoy your skill you earned it and ignore those that just don`t know. Happy Sunday Jeff

Curious, when hunting from that setup, do you get to fire a barrel-warmer / sighter shot at something to confirm wind drift? Just comparing to getting a good zero at Williamsport using claybirds on the bank.

I suppose if you show up with a cold bore and pay attention to the first shot, and do it enough times, you'll develop a good knowledge of the true cold bore accuracy.

I don’t take sighter shots, some guys do but I don’t.

Wasn't clear if this was the first bear you've harvested, sounded like it in the opening post. Naturally you have skills and/or friends to help clean. Is bear good eating? Of course you have a plan and everybody on the crew will be having bear steak dinner

Sorry for your ignorance, you must live in in a small bubble. Apparently you've never been around anyone who shoots long range. Get out of your bubble and learn something about long range shooting.
We all have bubbles; some are smaller than others. He who is without a bubble, cast the first stone."

You're right however, it's long-range shooting, not hunting. The bear is merely an "F Class target." The problem is the bear has a vital area, a target does not. A sudden wind or less than optimum trigger pull on a target merely places the bullet out of the 10 ring, but on an animal, it may condemn the critter to a slow and painful death. This undesirable effect is significantly increased at ranges like this.

This fellow who made the shoot is obviously an accomplished shooter, a specialist. What concerns me is that "Billy Bob Rifleman" is going to try this just to see if he can do it regardless of the consequences to the animal. Of course, that's not the OP's fault, just an unintended consequence of glamorizing these shots.

Sorry, I just couldn't resist - forgive me. But I wonder how many of those responding to this post are experienced hunters or just shooters.

.

i think they would have understood alot better if he was shooting a 6.5 CM in a RPR.

sorry if i wet your keyboard lol
Having my keyboard "peed" on is the price of speaking your mind.

But I respect other viewpoints. None of us are perfect. We are a product of our experiences and belief systems.
