100gr 257 Roberts ammo

A friend of mine has an old 257 Roberts his Dad built many years ago on a 98 Mauser action. He cannot get it to shoot accurately, and gave it to me to try and figure out the problem. The barrel is a 11.5" twist, and of course will not stabilize the 117gr ammo he is using. I have looked on the net and can only find two companies loading 100gr bullets, Norma and Nosler. Anybody know of any other factory loaded 100gr ammo for the 257 Roberts that won't break the bank? By the way, his Dad built a really nice rifle. Thanks, Barlow

Since nobody with any sense will reaload for someone else, you need to invite him over to your house and "help" him load up abox of ammo, 75 flat base bullets of any brand will work well in that twist with any powder close to 4350. Who knows you might get another person started realoading...

The 11.5" twist rate will be "ideal" (Sg1.5) with either FB, or, BT bullets up to 0.99" long. If you stick with FB, you'll be very good with bullets up to 1.00" long (>Sg1.4), and probably decent wit up to 1.10" long. These lengths will probably place the weights from about 85 to 100 Gr. In this weight range, polymer tipped bullets will likely be too long for best results. RG

The OP didnt say he was reloading for someone else Farmer, he asked who else beside Norma and Nosler factory loaded 100 gr bullets in 257 Roberts.
Barlow, I dont know. Handloading may be his only option. I use Barnes 80 gr in my 257AI on deer and it does a great job. Good luck

My old 257 Roberts was fussy about which Hundred grainer it would shoot well. Loved the Speer 100gr Huge Hollow point, short & fat. Lousy BC. The Hornady Spire point 100gr. flat base would group well enough, I shot more than a few deer with that combo. Mike in Ct

I was not really interested in handloading for this rifle but I will if the owner helps. I have used the 100gr Speer sp for a nephews 257 Roberts and they work great. The price of the factory stuff is obnoxious. Is just too nice of a rifle for his son and grandsons not to use, and I would do it in his honor. Barlow

Sadly the 100 gr Hornady FB went the way of the DooDoo bird. As did the Sierra 100 gr FB Pro Hunter
ADD
Upon further review, neither Hornady or Sierra show FB 100gr bullets on their website. However, Powder Valley does show 100gr FB Sierra in stock

Norma sells (in their PH line) +P 100 grn. Goes for $40.00 at Midway. Also - Nosler loads a partition spitzer 100 grain in their "Nosler Custom" line for $64.99 - also at Midway. I looked around just a bit because I was curious as I also have a .257 Roberts but because my chamber was cut a little too long from the factory - I have handloaded exclusively for it. Honestly - I looked twice at the price of the Nosler ammo as I haven't priced factory ammo in a long time. Wouldn't want to burn a few hundred rounds of that at the range in a day.

I've shot a couple of deer with the Hornady 100 gr. PSP. The bullet performed very well. These were flat bottom bullets.

I worry the Sierra BT may shed its jacket more readily than the Remmys, therefore, I would choose the PSP from the two bullet you offer.

I'm sure either one, well placed, will have no trouble with a deer, although I am a strong proponent of premium bullets. I don't see any reason to step up to a 115 or 120 gr. premium bullet.

He can't use 115 or 120 anyways ,non-issue.
