1000 Yard Ladder Test...?

Anyone ever try one? For picking a 1000 Yard load?

Did my first one yesterday, using sharpie-marked bullets to mark holes. No need for a forward observer, or pits...spotter behind me only confirmed that the shots hit the paper, so woth good conditions, one can do this alone...

Shot 2 shots per charge, round robin, sort of) low->high; low->high so fouling/heat conditions were evened out.

sited in low on a tall target with the lowest load, and the highest load,100fps faster) ended up about 3feet higher than the slowest)

This was with a 284/180berger/H4831SC .3gn increments 54.7-56.5gns,2780-2880fps)

55.3 and 55.6,4 shots) went into 1.5" vertical at 1020yds. The others climbed predictably up the paper. velocities:2808, 2809, 2809, 2818

Funny thing though...the whole group seemed to expand horizontally approaching the cluster, then narrowed again at the top end...basically a vertical diamond shape if you outlined everything.

I plan to try a 10-shot group at 55.5 and see what happens. Ideally, this should give me a pretty flat group, but who knows...

Thoughts? Anyone ever try this before?

I have wanted to do this but didn't know how shooting alone.

How well does the sharpie show up in the black? or do you use an all white target?

Would have to have good conditions though.

Matt

Sounds good and all, but I think most people are limited by range access and/or weather conditions to the point where it's not very feasible. People on the 'Net tell me about how they only do their long range load workups 'at distance', usually not less than 300yds, usually further out even.

All I gotta say is... must be nice to shoot on a range w/,relatively) no wind!!! I have to make dang sure I have a *very* likely candidate @ 100yds before I'm bother waiting out the weather to try and shoot it at 300, much less 600.

Actually, I'm 'guilty' of going to 500yd Prone/F-Class matches over on the coast for the sake of 'load development'... their ranges are like golf-course swathed out of Sherwood forest, compared to ours... which is more like something out of the windy part of Wizard of Oz... ;) Not quite that bad, but enough that I wouldn't consider trying to do any sort of ladder test... the up drafts alone would probably render any such testing useless, IMHO.

YMMV,

Monte

Matt -- no black...but Blue sharpie actually lets a sheen on black paper.

I started printing one large med-light blue "X" on printer paper...find the color and size that works for you reticle.

600pt Arial "X" works good for lower-mid power scopes.

Monte...evening shooting only :D

wind was nice, and 14rds down in a minute of so...

JB

Evening? That's when our range,Monte and I share it with the rest of the club, begrudgingly) tries to blow to the other side of the county!

We've got a good 600 yard line, and 1000 if we cheat and use the neighboring wheat-farmer's land a bit... He gets fill rock from the range so I guess it's a pretty good trade.

Why 55.5 grains??? Isn't that where the widest part of your diamond shaped group was? Maybe I don't understand. Not an unusual circumstance... Guy

Guy...yea, but it was the FLATTEST...4 shots, 2@55.3, and 2@55.6 were in 1.5" vertical. That is as good as you can get at 1K.

I was always under the impression you tune for vertical, and the horizontal was you or the wind.

You gotta get the vertical out before anything else will do any good.

the widest part of the diamond mentioned, where the vertical was non-existent) was only 8" wide, so that doesnt really take much wind to do such a thing...if it was 2feet wide, i might be worried...

I'm calling it wind until i can prove otherwise.

JB

Good point JB50BR :)

Yup - tend to get some pretty serious horizontal stringing here at the 600 yard range Monte and I use too. I like tuning for vertical too.

Regards, Guy

Didn't get to shoot my 10-shot group sat...to hot and too much mirage to get a good read on the load IMO...this week I'll shoot it...

Lynn -- 57.0h4831SC,2900fps) was giving pretty good ejector marks, so i set max a 56.5,still light marks)

JB

Alright...have some results...

Equip Recap:

Viper action 284 Win.
Kreiger 1:9
180 Berger LONG throated, sorted by bearing surface)
210M primer
necked up lapua brass
Turned to 13thou,.310 loaded in a .313 chamber)
~2825fps at the muzzle

26.75MOA to 1022yds

Shot 55.4 at 82deg CALM

10 shots at 1K

Did something stupid...

Shot the first, after sighting in) 6 shots and decided to go grab my mirage fan in case it got wavy near the end of the string, sometimes happens in hot/humid conditions with NO wind)

then shot the last 4...

Well, my target revealed this:

6 shots in 4.75...4 shots also in 4.75, but separated by about 3" vertical from the 6-shot group...so i'm thinking the fan changed my "view" of the paper, and in-turn POI...

-----------------------------

Fast forward to this past Sat at Williamsport,6/24/06) Condition were absolutely perfect, wind and mirage) at about 2:30PM

Loaded 55.6 due to expected lower temps.

had a 20shot weight segregated relay,VIRGIN BRASS).

Used 2 to get sighted on a bird, gun still dirty and sighted in from the previous 10-shot group)

put 18 shot on paper in maybe 3 minutes with my dad plotting the group in the pits.

14 of the 18 were in the 10 ring,3-9's 1-8 - the first shot)

***the 10 best shots in the 10 ring showed about 3" vertical, and 3.9" overall...so those 10 were picked for the record string and the 5 closest for "good sighters" and the other 5 demoted to "junk-sighters"

Will post a pic later.

This was a first for me, shooting a big group to pick brass...which used the results from my FIRST 1000 Yard ladder. So hopefully all the NEW things don't burn me :D

Guess we'll all see how this works out soon, as these cases are heading to our World Open in 2 weeks...

Thoughts?

Lynn -- brass was virgin for the test...all measurment i have taken, except water cap were consistant...it is all an experiment, meaning i did NOT test water cap.) :D
