Russ, in 2012 Norm won the Mustin with a Palma rifle. I know that for a fact as I won the any rifle class (used a 284 Win) in the shoot off. We both had cleans but he had an X or two more. I returned the favor at end of the week though as I moved from 5th or 6th to make the podium for the bronze after the Palma match and bumping him down a spot or two. John Whidden finished with the silver shooting a 243 during the week and yeah, we both got beat by a Palma rifle as David Luckman won the week, shooting a Palma rifle all week. So, like ya said, its not all about fast bullets. I made another shoot off that week, the Leech, but Nancy whupped all of our butts in that one, 100-8, if I remember correctly.
I dont disagree about the recoil and better elevation of the 6s. When I dont shoot the 284 I run a regular ol' 6xc and its dont really well for me too. Shot a 996 at Butner with it (five 1000 yard matches) with three cleans in a row over 2 days, all with double digit X counts and then two 198s in a row to finish out, both of those were double digit X counts as well, i believe. That was with 108 Bergers running right about 3,000fps, not barn burners. Just no recoil with that round and the elevation with it is super. Both the 6xc and the 284 bbls were done by Blair Clowdis and both are super accurate, its the nut behind the bolt that leaves Xs on the table.
The 284 with a 180 is about the max recoil I shoot comfortably. Anything more than that I and I get a bit annoyed with it over the course of a weekend or longer. There simply isnt a "super cartridge" and nothing defeats the wind. Yeah, some stuff does a bit better, but if you cant turn the knobs, you are going to get bit at some point, no matter what you are slinging down range.
Russ, Kent's 200-17x was done with a Palma rifle and 2155s. i scored it at Lejeune.
