1000 br gun

looking at building a 1000 yard br gun, not sure what caliber, can some of you tell me what the most used caliber in 1000 yard br is? and what weight bullets are used? i'm thinking 243 ai or a plain ole 6mm br. but not sure.

D & B Supply in Charlotte, N C 704 824-7511 produces some mighty fine 1000 yd. rifles. Bill Shehane is the owner and would be very helpful with figuring out what you want to do. I purchased a 6 - 47 Shehane which is a necked down 6.5 - 47 Lapua for 600 yd. shooting. It is a fine rifle and I would reccomend him to anyone. Tell him Bill Norris sent you to him. Thanks, Bill

There are several site that have 'equipment lists'. The more wind the larger the cal. Unless you are very, very & very good at reading the wind.

Donovan got it right. It's not the cartridge that wins long range matches, it's the shooter.

Neil - If there is any place that the wind really blows, it's Reno. At the NBRSA Nationals a few weeks ago I noticed that most winners were shooting cartridges that made tiny holes in the paper. Like a 6mm BR !!! AARGH!! ;);)

Cheechako, At the Pella National in 2005? There was a guy shooting a 17 Mark V,and was getting 12 inch group. Way better than I could do. Dosn't meam I would recommend one. I think I came in 25 and 41st.
If you look at what has won the most it's not 6mm. Some are just better with the wind than me.

Yes, the shooter needs to develop the load to gain the most accuracy but some cartridges are much easier to shoot accurately than others. The 6mm rounds like the dasher, 6x47 Lapua and even the standard 6BR are extremely accurate and easy to shoot. They have almost no recoil, have many components available, and seem to shoot many different loads with ease. You just can't go wrong with one of these catridges. Other catridges are far more difficult to tune and get the best accuracy out of.
