100-200 yd benchrest project

I am new to the benchrest scene, and am in need of some expert advice. I am interested in building a 100-200 yd benchrest rifle. I have picked out a few of the components that I would like to use, but am in need of advice on each one. The caliber will be a 6ppc. From what I have read this is pretty much the norm. The action either a BAT SV or Stolle Panda. 2oz Jewell trigger. Master 1000 benchrest stock. Broughton 5c barrel, not sure of the twist probably a 1-8. Nightforce Br scope in a 12-42. As I said before, I am new to benchrest and this is what I have in mind. I am looking for help in making this long time dream a reality. Thanks in advance. Scott

Be very hard to make weight with the Nightforce scope. also twist of barrel is wrong, 14 twist is what most use. Suggest a 269 neck for easier neck turning. 36 Weaver, Sightron, and the new luepold and the March scopes would be in line optics wise. I am shooting a McMillan EDGE stock, Kreiger barrel, Jewel trigger, Viper drop port.

Thanks for the advice. I am overwhelmed with all the things that go into making a quality rifle, and I do not have anyone to help me. You mentioned the weight. I'm sure there is a rule book I should know about, but don't. Like I said I am new to this.

NBRSA and IBS have different rules for guns. Depends on what is in your area or where you are traveling. LV is 10.5#, HV is 13.5#, Sporter is 10.5# with a minimum of 6MM. Make a 10.5# rifle in 6 PPC and you can shoot in any class. Closest range to me for group is Minetonka, which is 6-8 hours. I shot Hunter, which is score, and that is only 1 hr and 10 minutes. Might be better off buying a used gun and trying first to see if you like it. Lots of other stuff to get also, windflags, rests, loading tools..........

Where in VA are you? I'm in Northern Va and would be happy to help out in any way I can. I shoot competitively all around the area and know the ins and outs of the BR seen here. There are many options so far as benchrest equipment goes, and its nice to take a look at some of that stuff before you go building a rifle. The best way to do that is to attend a match and talk to some of the shooters, and get a feel for whats going on. If you are close to Manassas, you can come see a match in just a few weeks time. Lots of different rigs to look at and a bunch of friendly shooters to talk to.

You'll have to nix your choice of stocks also.
The dimensions of the 1000 yd Masterclass stock is not legal for registered 100/200 BR.

You might want to check with the Shooters Corner for a good used setup. Instant gratification with less pain.

Which of the two disciplines are you wanting to compete ? group or score? If you want to shoot group matches then the 6ppc is the rifle to go with, if on the other hand you want to shoot in score only then I'd go with a 30br. The 30 cal. hole will give you a heads up advantage of larger bullet holes to maybe catch the higher scoring ring as apposed to the 6 mm. bullet. I have both the 6ppc and 30br. Hope this helps

Thanks for pointing that out. I have sent my paperwork into the IBS, and as far as I can tell the matchs near me are for score. So now I am considering a 30br. I think this will allow me to get my feet wet. The article on the 30br said that it is a little more forgiving as far as reloading ammo at home, and the barrel life is much longer. I understand that with the 6ppc it is better to load at the range. If all goes well I will then look at building a 6ppc.

What I have been told and am finding out through experience is that the 30BR is less forgiving of bag handling mistakes. At our last score match I fired 2 50-4x's at 200. On one of them the non-X was nearly a nine ! I did fire a 49-4x 100 yd target at the same match, OUCH !!

First off I would like to thank everyone for their input. Here is the configuration I have decided on. The gun will be set up as a switch barrel rifle. 6ppc and 30br. I will be using the 6ppc for group and the 30 br for score 100/200 yds. The action will be a BAT 3L. 3 lug, .308bf, rb,lp,re, 1.365" round stainless. The action will be polished as well as the barrels. The 6ppc barrel will be a Krieger 1-13.5 twist. Jewell trigger 2oz. Mcm Edge stock. The two thing I am unsure of is the scope and the 30br barrel configuration. As far as the scope, I am leaning toward a Leupold Comp. 45x45 with the 1/8 min target dot. The barrel I am not sure. This gun should be a shooter. A special shout out to Lester at Bruno's. Great customer service. Thanks Lester.

For the 30 barrel, a 17 or 18 twist will fit the bill nicely. I would go with a LV taper, so you can keep the gun at 10.5 with either barrel. Lester normally keeps them in stock as well. For the scope, the March is really starting to look appealing, but the Leupold will work as well. In short range BR, scopes are one of the major topics these days. A scope that won't hold POI is a very BAD thing. Some scopes are shipped with POI problems before ever seeing the top of a rifle, while others fail in time. The current trend is either a fixed, epoxied internally) scope with external adjustments, or the March which is gaining tremendous acclaim. March may have solved the problems of POI shifts in internally adjustable scopes. They are $$$ though at $2100 for a fixed 40X, 50X, or 60X. You can get into an externally adjustable set-up for less than $1000 if you use a Weaver/Sightron/Leupold,36X), and about $1500 using the LCS Leupold. I have a frozen set-up that I will show you.
