10/22TD accuracy

The 10/22 TD is notorious for not being an accurate gun. I took two out to the range, and all of the hv ammo I tested and most subsonic was poor. My sons gun just has a 4X scope on it and mine has a Burris 2x7 rf scope on it. neither are target scopes and the crosshairs are not for bullseye shooting. Mine wears a magpul backpacker stock and both have some trigger work. When shooting SK std plus and Norma mine was shooting sub .625 groups and his was under 3/4", making both of these guns quite acceptable for small game and varmint shooting. Before I tried these 2 kinds of ammo, neither would have been good for anything but cans. Shooting was done at 50yds. I have stoned both bolts for probably 1 hr to smooth them up and now they both cycle with out failure. The moral of the story is they are both horribly picky about ammo, but both turned out to be fairly accurate with the correct ammo and a little tlc. SK std plus and Wolfe MT are the same round in a different box, both loaded by Lapua.

Take this advice for what it cost you.... I inherited a 1990s 10/22 from my dad's safe after he passed away last year... It might have had a box of ammo shot through it maybe , the rest of it's life it stayed in a gun safe... When I got it I did some work on the receiver because the bolt wouldn't come out , not sure how they got it in there lol... I went through it and cleaned it and the barrel very well , oiled it up good and took it out and ran a few boxes of junk through it....

It shot ok but I sat down and cleaned it very well again put a scope on it etc but this time I ran a few patches of jb bore paste through the barrel then cleaned it up and tryed again.... After a few fouling shots you could tell it was shooting way better only using CCI SV.... I sat and cut down some tall johnson grass at 60 yards that was growing on the back berm with it.... Smoothing the bore seemed to really help , I have done this with a few cheap .22lr and it improves every one of them including a cheap heritage rough rider pistol I bought with gift cards as a toy... It way improved the little pistol to the point that I really enjoy shooting it , it by no means is a tack driver but it will at least shoot now , the problem with it I think was it had so much gunk in the barrel from the factory that just cleaning without the bore paste wasn't getting it clean , after it was like night and day...

Although you can't go wrong with the Kidd stuff , it seems like alot for a take down.... But it sure won't hurt anything...lol

Nopers.

Wolf is now loaded by Eley.

When did they start?? My case of 5000 has Lapua on it. It is also a few years old. I guess at least I have plenty of ammo it will like! FYI I just called them and they said that 2 years ago they switched and it is Eley Target now.

Your best bet is a Kidd 16" barrel and a Kidd trigger kit. Best bang for the buck.
I am quite happy with 5/8" groups from a takedown rifle. I wanted a rifle that was compact, and reasonably accurate, and I finally have it with the right ammo. I am sure I could tighten the groups up a little if I put one of my V16's with a target dot on it, so I was not totally covering the center of the target, but this will kill any sparow, rabbit or Prairie Dog I care to shoot at rimfire ranges.

Plenty accurate for your purposes ,that is some fine shooting . I have never owned the take-down model...was a little skeptical about accuracy until now.

You have to make sure the lock up has the same tension and is tight every time you put it together otherwise the action and barrel are pointing in different directions, kind of like the break action pellet guns.

Mine is probably almost too tight of lockup. It's a bear to takedown. putting it together is not too bad. POI is really good when going back together. Not BR good but hunting good.

Mr. Adams:

I am a city boy. What is Johnson grass?
Lol , sorry.... The grass that grows in long thin stalks , most people try to kill it in yards because it grows trice as fast as normal yard grass.... I hope that's the correct name I will ask some guys at the range what they call it and get back..... Of course I called channel locks , water pump pliers for 30 years because on the farm that's what we called them...lol
