10/22

I picked up a 10/22 the other day with a heavy after market barrel in a plastic stock that it did not fit in, I sanded the barrel channel out where it fit, put a Vratex 4x16 on it and it shoots pretty good but the barrel is not floated. Will floating it help?
Thanks in advance.

If it is a heavy long .920" contour barrel , floating in a 10/22 probably won't be best. Reason is it will depend on the fit between the tendon and receiver. Volquartsen sells a pillar kit for the 10/22 that gives the action a solid place to sit on and the kit comes with a pad you place in the barrel channel to support the barrel so the weight isn't levering on the receiver . The 10/22 uses a single action screw in the front so that heavy barrel and the single front screw create a pivot point. Ruger could make it much better by adding a rear screw. I use a tire patch in the channel for the barrel to rest on. It dampens vibrations and also supports the weight of the barrel. Rifle shoots great that way.

Some 10/22 rifles shoot some amazing groups!

Some will and some won't. I have a 10/22 that needed a small rubber shim under the barrel about the half of the length to shoot better. You can buy a cheap wood stock on eBay for little money and sand it out to see if free floating works.

From my experience both the Ruger 10/22 and Ruger #1 both like a pressure point on the Barrel at least with the factory barrel
