10/22 magazine question

I bought a close out 10/22 bull barrel target rifle over xmas, and got out to shoot it today for the first time. Been a while since I owned one. Was pretty accurate for 10/22 standards so I'm quite pleased so far except one thing.

After the last round is fired, the action is not holding the bolt open. Seems like all the 10/22s I've shot before did that.

Did Ruger change the design and they no longer hold the bolt open? Is it the target models that don't do this? And if it is suppose to hold the bolt open, what might be wrong?

Rifle and magazine is new...no wear and tear.

I might be mistaken, but I don't recall them ever staying open after the last shot, I know there is a manual "hold open lever" by the trigger guard, but as fare as staying open, I don't believe so

Thanks Mark. I might be mistaken thinking it held open automatically, but don't recall accidently shooting my old one with no case in chamber before. Might need to learn to count to 10 again. I had forgotten about the manual button...thanks for that reminder. Messed with it a bit just now and I have to say it is rather ruff in operation.

Not to nit pick too bad...I know quality has gone downhill for a lot of products. What I assume is a Boyd's laminate stock...while finished quite well in most way, it sure is rough around the ejection cutout. And the tang area of the stock is way higher than the action. Will be sanding on those two areas some. The action feels likes there is sand in it. Might smooth out after some carbon build up though. Overall though it isn't nearly as refined as the Sporter model I bought about 15 years ago.

I only have one 10/22 it was made a long time ago and still has the metal receiver , it or any other one I have shot hold the bolt open on the last shot... I was just looking at the bull barrel version online a few minutes ago myself , hope you enjoy your new rifle... I absolutely hate locking the bolt open on mine it's hard to get it unlocked again.... As far as rough just keep it lubed well and shoot it , it will smooth out....

Thanks! The bull barrel version I got is the black laminate stock with stainless barrel and action. Sportsman Warehouse on sale for $340 because they were closing them out. I checked the Ruger website and it appears they are no longer going to make this particular version any more, so I had to buy it.

Now that yall say thing, I cant remember if its open or shut on the last round either. Never pay that much attention...

I do know cheap mags mess up alot on the cycling. The plasic feed lip mags are junk

I won't buy cheap 10/22 mags for that very reason. Even if they do work at first, they quickly wear out and fail. This one is the factory mag with the metal lips.

Factory mags can be a pita to insert and extract at times too.

Quite true. The one that came with it isn't exactly a smooth insertion, but at least it feeds and doesn't jam.

Work with the wood inside the magazine well. The magazines should fall free. Factory, not aftermarket. Some of the high capacity mags are not the same length at the top, causing a tilting angle and feed problems. The 10 22 does not lock open after the last shot.

Please allow me to clarify this for you.....the 10-22 or the 10-22 magnum DO NOT have a bolt hold open feature that works automatically on the last round {like for example an AR-15}. None of them ever did from the factory. The 10-22 does have a bolt hold open feature from the factory, but it is manual only.
There is such an animal though, it is made by a company called CS T {Custom Shooting Technologies...google "10-22 bolt hold open"} and it works great. It includes the drop in parts needed and a modified magazine. It is a good idea to have this feature because not too many shooters count the rounds and know when to stop. Inevitably, after the last round we all go "click" one last time...the problem is that the firing pin will eventually peen the breech and the displaced metal encroaches on the chamber causing the rifle to jam until it is corrected.
There is another modification that I do to all of mine. That is to do away with the ridiculous way you have to beg and jack around with the bolt release to get it to let the bolt go. It is a very simple modification. The bolt release has to be removed and you will see a little heart shaped hole roughly in the middle. File out the little point in the hole and you can just pull back on the bolt handle to release it. This doesn't make it automatically hold open on the last shot, just makes it easier to release the bolt when you manually set it open.

I believe I just pull the bolt rearward and released it like a bow string to charge from an open or closed position. I think all mine do this. It's not often I need to rock the bolt release forward, usually on an empty gun.
None stay open after last round.

It's been a little bit since I shot any of them, maybe I'm mistaken.

As "msinc" has replied, the bolt will not stay open on the last round fired. There are mods that can be made but not worth the hassle.

Volquartsen trigger units will not lock back, but will release and run forward after tugging the operating handle.

I believe there is a mod that can be installed/added for last shot- bolt hold open, but as others have said normal operation does not keep bolt back. I did add a modified an auto bolt release piece from Kidd to allow the bolt to go forward by simply pulling the charging handle back and letting it go. Otherwise you have to fuss with that small tab down by the trigger guard (that's a PITA).
