10/22 BR barrel length

i have almost completed my 10/22 based build for ABRA shooting and am debating with myself what barrel length to go with. Research has been confusing at best, I have read conflicting reports on that length is considered best and its been talked in circles, ie 18-20" is stiffest and therefore best, 21" is best because its what lilja uses, 24-26" is best because that's what is popular without much explanation why, 28" is best because it stabilized the bullet more time.

Ive also read some folks believe the 10/22 receiver cannot support longer than 20"ish heavy barrels because of its short tenon, or that the longer dwell time of longer barrels allows the action to open when the bullet is still in the bore causing consistency or accuracy issues and so on.

Furthermore, what is the widely accepted most accurate form of bedding for the platform? Bedding just the action like centerfire? Bedding the action and first inch or so of the barrel and free float the rest of the barrel? Bed the entire barrel and float the action/ or bed everything? iI plan on running a barrel tuner on the rifle if that factors into any decisions. Please help breathe some clarity and real world insight on this much debated topic

Cheers

Joe Chacon uses 24" barrels.. his faves are either a Shilen ratchet or a Douglas barrel on his builds.. from what i have seen.. the 24" Ratchet barrel is a good choice..

Next question, Can a 24" tube be successfully free floated on a 10/22 platform? Is it too heavy and too much for the small tenon to support or is that bologna ? the longest barrel Ive used is 20".

yeah.. it will handle it!

The DOC might occaisionally wish to remind folks as he posts those magnificent targets that they're about 1/2 the distance most of the matches are shot which is 50yds/meters.

What !!!, are you serious those aren't 50yds. targets
Actually, they are not shot at half the distance.. they are shot 33 yard targets.. you have to wipe the X out in order to get them! Shooting from indoors to outdoors at night. The wind on some nights have been just awful, and the mirage was bad enough to make think the targets are doing the Cha-Cha! These are money matches, i am shooting in the Unlimited class.. meaning i am going against Calfee guns, Miller guns.. even Bill Pippins real shooter.. the targets you have seen for the most part are the ones where i have won.. i have shot some bad ones too.. but only a point was dropped.. When i have shot bad, it was a matter of poor choices.. the choice of when it was the correct time to release the trigger.. Shooting these 10/22s isn't like shooting a bolt gun either. You actually have to work at it!

I am sorry you feel you need to justify those targets, but I am surprised you didn't say they were shot at 33yds.
but what gets me is that you feel shooting bolts guns are easier to shoot, so I guess my targets are meaningless compared to yours!

It is all tongue and cheek..the part about the bolt guns.. i am not trying to "justify" anything, but more so, just providing the environment at hand. My humor can at times be well rather subtle. But yes.. it has been mentioned before that these have been shot at 33 yards.. in another thread..

Don't be so "defensive" i have never said that any target is "meaningless".. nor was i intending that to you personally!
