6.5-284 Norma is more than capable.
im sure 6.5-284 will do the job but i was just looking at load data for 6.5/06 in nosler data and it keeps up and in some cases surpasses 6.5 prc and and 6.5/284 velocity wise. never had one of those but always heard good things about them. Id be trying a 26 Nosler or the like though. What is the smallest 6.5mm cartridge suitable for hitting a gong at 1 mile?
Please specify what size gong you are thinking of.
Nice.Ive been putting together a rifle just for this task. Savage 12 PTA, 28” criterion 8T chambered in 6.5 Creedmoor, APA little bastard brake, HS precision stock, 40 moa rail, burris signature zee rings with max offsets, and Trijicon Tenmile 5-50x56.
With the offset inserts, I am able to get 100 yd zero at near bottom of scope elevation, which then gives me nearly 100 moa adjustment. Ballistic calculator show approx 83 moa needed with 147ELDM at 2700fps to reach one mile.
Planning to setup steel during prairie dog trip in June. My steel targets are a bit small, so I need to get something closer to 18 inches for 1 moa. Fun stuff!
