1 in 8 twist 6BR barrel

I just got my action this week, have a trigger ready, and the stock is on it's way here. I'm waiting on a 12 twist 6BR barrel but I'm tired of waiting. NSS has 8 twist 6BR barrels in stock so I'm thinking of just getting one and play with that until the 12 twist shows up some day. How would the 8 twist do with 80 grain Berger FB and even the Berger 68 grain FB? I have a bunch of those bullets ready for the 12 twist.

The 80 grain Berger will shoot just fine in an 8 twist barrel. I can't comment on the 68 grain Berger as I've not tried it in an 8 twist barrel.

80 gr Bergers will shoot great in an 8 twist. 68's maybe, maybe not. stick with 80 Bergers. awesome bullet. 30 grs or so of N135 is the ticket

Even the 68s will shoot sub 3s with ease in the 8T, but I would invest your time & components with the bullet & powders you plan to use in the long run. Pressure/velocity differences will be marginal.

The biggest deciding factor should be your freebore. Some of these flat backs, especially the 80s, will seat much deeper than anything in Boattail form.

Thanks everyone. I think I'll just order it. I think the Shilen has a .098 freeborn and .272 neck. I have some N135. :) Would AR Comp work well with the 80 Bergers and where to start with it?

The problem (if you can call it that) is that everything from Benchmark to Varget will shoot relatively small in a straight 6br. Without knowing your priorities, it will be tough for those with more experience than I to provide better options. FWIW, I would start low with both N135 and 8208. Don't think of those "low" speed shots as wasted. Don't think of the ones past max pressure that you have to pull as wasted either. Keep a great log and they'll be invaluable for future barrels, lots of powder, etc. IMHO, if new to a cartridge, you want to make sure to start low enough that you can see it go in and out and back in tune again. Otherwise, you run the risk of hovering near max pressure, out of tune, without ever really knowing if you can make the next node safely and reliably or not across varying temperatures.

I caught hell finding a 12 twist for a BRA build last year about this time before I finally found a Bartlein in stock somewhere. If you want anything but an 8 or 14 twist get ready to wait.

Since you said NSS, , I'm guessing you are looking for a "PerFit" BBl.
Try,"Bughole" or Bughole barrels, they have a selection of few different make barrels, and what twist and contours they have available.
What contour {OD @ the muzzle} did NSS have for your 1-8 barrel ?

I shot this personal best, 5 shot group on xmas eve. It measured .102. N135 is the ticket, with varget close behind. I have not even done any seating tests yet. Pic is taken looking down on a 6 br case next to group.

Nice shooting! Hope you get a lot of groups like that one. Went ahead and ordered a Shilen 8 twist through NSS. Shilen had one in stock and hopefully it will be sent out Monday so I can get this gun together while I wait and wait for the other barrels. LOL

I'm shooting the same barrel with tuner and 107 SMK's now. Might have to try those 80 Bergers just for the experience of it.

My Lapua 1:8 really loves Sierra 95 gr Tipped MK's and Varget for Varmt for Score at 100 and 200 yards.
