1 in 8 or 1 in 10 twist 6mm barrel

Hi I'm trying to decide on what twist barrel to run shooting out to 600y thinking 1 in 8 or 10 not sure also thinking on what cal 6br or 6x45 thanks

The twist rate is dependent upon the bullet weight(s) you are expecting to use. There is a very good article on this site about the Berger Bullets stability calculator. The 6mmBR Norma is one of the most inherently accurate cartridges around. If you are going to be using a bolt action then I would recommend you consider that. There is ample discussion of that cartridge on this site as well. I don't know enough about the 6X45 to offer advice.

A 8 will shoot most heavy bullet. along with the mid weights. 10 will shoot mid weight and some heavy's 600 yds I would do 8 1000 yds I like a 7.5 Larry

You'll need the powder capacity for 600 yd work. MO is that the .223 case ain't quite as good as the BR case in accuracy or capacity. But, some guys shoot the mouse gun to 1K...and deal with the trajectory. Diff'rent strokes.

As a comparison, am using a .243Win (greater powder capacity) and 115grain DTACS with a Bartlein 1-7.7 twist barrel (27" long) for distance work.

Tom, I am going to make a correction to your post above. Twist rate is "NOT" dependent on bullet weight, and as a matter of fact the weight of the bullet has nothing at all to do with the twist rate. It is the length of the bullet that will determine what twist rate you need to use. This is an all to common mistake made by many. Of course when a bullet is longer it will weigh more ( of course) but even if it was lighter and longer ( big if there) it would need a tighter twist to stabilize.

jmc223, You would be best served by heading the advice here and get the 8 twist barrel. It is many times more useful for 600 yds than a 10 twist were you would be very limited to bullets that would stabilize in that slower twist barrel.

1/10" twist with the 6x45 & you will not have any issues at 700 yards with a 55-95g bullet.
So easy to load for vs the 6br.
That's my build from 2011, accurate as all get out on p-dogs to antelope and paper.
Just shooting paper & for groups then yup the 6br would be my pick.....maybe.

Get an 8. In my opinion in a 6BR it seems like go fast or stay slow.

I did a 12 twist at one point and I didn't shoot the thing much. I think If it had been a 14 i'd a had more fun at 100 yards, and with the 12 it really wasn't a lot of fun at long range. Don't get me wrong, it worked, but I think an 8 would have been more fun.
