1 in 14 twist , 223 remington barrel projectiles

I recently grabbed a rem 700 in 223 with a 1 in 14 twist varmint barrel. I found a box of 50 grain v max's to try. I was thinking about 26 grains of Varget. Just a quick question before I load, any other recommendations for projo weight?

Thanks

Are you sure it is a 14" twist? All my 223 Remington's are 12" twist.

50 grain Vmax should be ideal for a 14" twist assuming the rifle likes that bullet.

Varget is also a good choice based on my experience with the 223 Rem. but there are many others that work very well also. Depending on which reloading data you access, 26 grains of Varget is near max or max. If you never worked up a load with Varget for this rifle I certainly would not start at a near max or max load.

I would go with benchmark. I found varget to be too slow. Maybe even H335 would be a better choice.

I have to ask, are you sure it's a factory barrel and 1 in 14 twist? I ask because I don't remember the 223 ever coming in that twist but the 222 Rem did and so did the 222 Rem Mag.

A 0.224 traditional profile (tangent bullet) in a 1 in 14 twist barrel will max out at about 53-55 grains. Flat based bullets usually work the best in terms of accuracy and allow for slightly higher bullet weight than boat tails. Best bullets in my opinion are the 53 Sierra Matching and the 52 Berger Target. The 52 grain Sierra Matching, 52 ge Nosler CC are next.

Save varget for the heavies I think. 40 to 50 is probably ideal. Exterminator is another powder that is good for light 223 bullets. Id pick the vmax that is on sale.

I got 50 gr blem vmax from midway for cheap. Shoulda bought 10,000 instead of 300. They shoot lights out for 12 bucks a box.

My Remington is a 12 twist. It loves H335 with V-Max's, both 50 & 55. I use 26.0 of H-335 with the 50 and 25.1 with the 55. YMMV and the typical caution to start low and work up applies....
