1:9 223 Rem longer range target load

The 73 ELD is likely nearly the most BC you can reliably stabilize in a 9 twist. My 9 twist savage wouldn't stabilize a 75 ELD. The bullet shoots too. My very first ever time shooting a midrange match, it gave 200-14x in an AR at 300.

The 70 RDF is the other bullet I would look at closely for a 9 twist. Those RDFs are super slick for their weight.

Thanks folks. Struggled to get the 73gr ELD-M loaded without serious powder crush with TAC so tempted to try HPBT as don’t seem to have a lot of lead to play with

73 eld-m with 24gr varget. Just touching the lands does it for me. 25.0 grains looked good too but have not tried it again just to make sure. This is a savage 12fv with a stocky stocks stock.

So far i've been shooting the 69gr SMK & TMK over a charge of Alliant PP2000MR.

As far as long range goes, mirage is my biggest hinderance. That & the tiny bullet hole.
I've shot well to 200 yards. But had issues seeing the bullet holes at 300 yards.
Bad mirage day!
I didn't shoot at 400 yards, cause i would just be lobbing rounds out there & hoping i was hitting the target without actually knowing.

On a good mirage day, it may be a different story.

Berger makes a great 70gr vld. About 25gr varget works great for me!

I train for hunting season with a Savage Model12 FCV.
I regularly shoot a 4" spinner out to 600yds.
My bullets of choice are 73gr BT Targets and 69gr TMK's

YES I SHOOT 68GR BTHP IN A 9TW SAVAGE TACTICAL BOLT AND THEY DO WELL FOR ME WITH VARGET

I'm running mine with CFE. 223. The 70 RDF IMR3031 also shoots well with this 20" barrel. The added BC carries it to an extended range accurately that the 68 Hornaday bthp isn't capable of.

Pretty much any bullet 68-77 should/may stabilize in a 1:9 twist barrel, lighter ones will work, but tough in the wind. Go with the highest BC bullet your rifle likes in that weight range, once you get over 75 grains, stability is questioned depending on it‘s design. They may work, maybe not, check to see if your twist is really 1:9, sometimes they can be a bit off, which affects your
bullet stability range.

Edit...if I had to pick one, it would be the 73 grain Berger, others are ok I’m sure, but this Berger is a tack driver.
