1:12 twist, 87 gr Vmax?

Have a chance to buy 6MM barrel, 1:12 twist at good price, but want to shoot 87gr Vmax at 2,800-2,900fps. Limits I read say close to or over limit?
Anybody making that work?
Thanks in advance.
Jerry

I used a 1-12 twist to shoot the 87grn V-max out my last 6mm rifle. However, I was shooting a 6x284 and pushing the 87grn V-Max at 3730fps out of a 30" barrel. The 1-12 worked perfect for that bullet. It grouped in the .1's and .2's and was an awesome shooting bullet out to 1000 yards.

I never tried the 105 or 107grn bullets in the 1-12. However, I tried the 95grn Berger VLD and they worked well. The 1-10 twist will allow you to shoot the 105's and 107's, so I guess it depends on what bullets you want to shoot. The 75grn V-Max's and the 70grn BT worked really well out of the 1-12 twist too.

I am thinking a 1-10 twist would work better for you at those velocities. However, I think the 1-12 twist will work fine. Good luck and let us know how it shoots.

Also, what cartridge are you planning on using? 2800 and 2900fps sounds pretty slow for any of the 6mm Cartridges, even for the 6BR. The 6BR shoots them at 3000+fps out of a 27" barrel.

I've got an old 244 Rem,6mm)in 12 twist orignal barrel still and it shoots the 87s just fine at 3040, my 6-284s are also 12 twist and they love the 87s at 3725.They will also shoot upto a 95 gr sp. but not a tipped bullet at that weight.

How fast are you pushing them.

What speed were you pushing them?

I live in eastern Virginia and typical shot is 75-250 yards. I have never felt a need to go over 2,800-2,900fps as at this speed I have little or no have copper fouling.
I have used the 600 Rem 308/110 vmax, 700 Rem 243/87 Vmax all at 2,800-2,900fps on very carefully chosen lung shots on whitetail deer.
But now have been bitten by the lure of the 6MMBR site and the accuracy bug and am going to try 6BR. Just trying to get there on my budget and trying not to make any $ mistakes.

It seems from CJ6, that if I move up to 3040fps it will work.
Anyone with lower speeds?

Community opinion?

Thanks in advance, Jerry

This question has come up a few times previously. My .002 :

After contacting Hornady about this combo in a 6XC, they said 1-12" is the minimum reliable twist. Soon after I found that 1-12" did in fact stabilize that bullet very nicely. If you're planning to shoot a case capacity from 6XC to,fill in the blank) you should do quite will with a 1-12" twist. On the other hand, I doubt that combo would work in a 6x47 Rem.

Dmoran,
"What caliber are you asking for?,You just say a 6mm barrel)
If your asking for a 6mmRem, you will be at very reduced charges to keep an 87gr bullet that slow."
........The barrel now is 6mm Rem, and I would like trim and chamber it for 6BR.
From the input it looks like I might need to pick up the speed a bit, but it will work, possibly up to 95gr
Since it will have a max of 95gr, what freebore should I look for and who may have that reamer?
Thanks for all the help, Jerry

Thanks to everyone for all the help.
I will let you know how it works out.
Interest to note that the Savage Varmiter in 6 Norma BR is a 1-12 twist, the F-class is a 1-8.

bought barrel, want order FL sizer Forster Competition and get neck sized.
This is what I can gather from a search of the website.
Questions that come mind are:
Should I go with a collet die until I determine best neck size or can use the dimensions listed and then order order a honed neck size die?

Chamber neck size, no turn .272
Loaded shell neck OD size .269
Tension on bullet .002
Bounce back from sizing .002
Order neck sizing die .265???

Bullet diameter .243
Total 6BR Lapua Norma case neck .026 This does not seem to be correct
Wanted? Expected loaded case neck .269
Thanks, Jerry
