1,000 yard prairie dog

OK, OK. so it isn't a real prairie dog. But it is the same size and roughly the same shape. Our prairie dog trip was a wash due to the Chinese virus so this is the next best thing. It was really at a thousand yards. And it only took me about 7 shots. Dealing with the wind is a challenge.

Kool

over the years I've got some 1K+ yd dogs

Two cartridges I used for extreme range were the 6XC & 260 AI

Lots of variables to consider at that range.....wind......target movement..bullet TOF

Nice Shooting Mongo!
Never got a pd at 1000yards yet.I did get one at 920 once on the day I forgot my rangefinder,we drove out and it was past a 1/2 mile and I paced it twice.920 is a conservative estimate but definitely short of a thousand.I did hit a dinosaur at a thousand in Utah with the same 6.5WSM though.Nice head shot btw:)

When shooting pdogs with Tubb at 750 yards we figured a 1 mph change in wind with a 6xc with 115 DTACS was a miss on a perfect shot on a standing dog.

Even on a perfect wind call, you could still be outside the edge of a dog just by the limit of the rifle and ammo. If a pdog is 3 inches wide standing, then you can only miss half of that so 1.5 inches at 750 yards. That's less than 1/4 moa. On a perfect wind call.

Just sayin...

Shot one at over a 1000yds with 15mph wind took 12 trys i was still happy, could not believe how much drift i had on some of the misses. was with a Savage 6BR

After reading VolDoc's article in Accurate Shooting years ago, I got interested in trying to kill a PD with a 20BR over a 1,000 yds. I found...it ain't easy...LOL! It's also very expensive! I never made it with a 20BR, but I have made a number of 1000 yd+ shots on PD's with a 6mm/284, 22/243 Imp, and a 20-20/250. The 6/284 turned out to be to difficult to spot your own hits because of muzzle jump. The 20/250 I've killed a number of PD's over 1,000 yds with the 20 cal Berger 55 gr. My longest kill with the 20/250 was last summer in Wyoming at 1,135 yds (3rd-shot) verfied by my shooting friend on a spotting scope. The easiest for me has been the 22-243 IMP. It will handle some wind, and will make 1,200 yds pretty easily. The 20/250 has a couple of problems...it just punches a hole through the PD at a 1,000 yds+, and it doesn't like ANY wind. I do like it though! I've killed a lot of PD's at 700-1200 yds with the 22-243 Imp (longest first shot kill was 948 yds). I can see the hits myself. I like that! I've tried several different scopes and have settled on the NF NXS 8-32 with the MOAR-T reticle. One can hold inside a PD at a 1000 yds.+ with that reticle. Enclosed is a picture of my 22-243 Imp. Panda RBLP, Kreiger 7.7 twist, Jewell trigger, and a Shehane ST-1000 stock. Cartridge on left is the 20/250 with the 55 gr Berger, and rt. is a 22-243 Imp with the 77 gr Sierra BK. I've gone to the 75 gr ELD Match recently. mongo chicago...keep after them PD's at long range. It's a kick for sure!! 7315br
Would love to hear more about the 20-250. What velocity are you shooting? Also, what yardage do you begin to see those Bergers penciling?

Tommie, since you asked...fwiw. I've played quite a bit with the 20/250 at the longer ranges. I've never shot anything but the 20 cal. 55 gr Berger at 700 yds and longer. I do have a lot of experience with the 20BR and the 55 gr Berger at between 5-700 yds on both PD's and GS's. The 55 gr Berger at those distances performs quite well on aerial displays particularly at 5-600 yds. The 55 gr Berger from the 20/250 does well on PD's out to 850 yds in giving a good account of itself...LOL! Beyond that it just seems to punch holes through PD's unless it hits bone or a head shot. I've backed the velocity down (use to push it to 3950 fps) on the 20/250 to around 3840 fps. It gives excellent accuracy and I quit having brass problems. My ballistic calculator shows just over 1900 fps and about 450 ft/lbs at a 1000 yds. Wind drift is another subject . A 10 mph at 090* is about 5' of drift. The 22/243 Imp hangs in there better in my opinion. It's still doing right at 2100 fps and 735 ft/lbs at a 1000 yds. About a 1' less wind drift than the 20/250 also. In Wyoming most mornings with the 20/250 at the longer ranges, the shooting is over within :30-:45. Occasionally longer...but pretty rare. A good spotter (who knows how to call shots) on a decent spotting scope is really helpful. Don't expect to hit one every shot (or every 4th shot...LOL!). Almost impossible. Relax and enjoy it when you do connect!! 7315br
What powder charge and barrel spec was it to get 3900 out of the 55gr in the 20-250?

how did the same bullet shoot in the 20br? Similar powder just lower charge?

Got my 1121 yd pd kill with a 22-250 75 Amax 15+ years ago.. Verified by a Lieca Geovid after my partner drove his vehicle to the dead pd. We didn't find it that difficult but we did practice at that range,
I always say either that was the unluckiest prairie dog in the world or I am one heck of a good shot. Guess what I claim.

I’d love to know what powders you’re using. A good friend is building a 20-225 designed for heavy bullets and is almost ready to start load development. Any insights are greatly appreciated.
