'03 Springfield

Good evening,

This is my first time on this site. Probably in the wrong place, so if so, adivse where I should post.
Have a high-numbered '03 Sprinffield actioned varminter, built in the '50s and stocked by Clayton Nelson. My plan is to restore the rifle to a "period" configuration.
Can any of you advise if I can re-bed to a pillar system, or stay with standard glass? ::)
I'm hopefull to find someone that has a like-new 22-6MM (or AI) reamer that I might rent.
All input appreciated. ;D

Wood stocks can be pillar bedded the same as synthetics can. .22-6mm / or AI doesn't sound quit 'period' , though. .22/243 can do a good job on barrel throat, .22-6mm should do damage even quicker. Velocity ain't everything! Havin' 'um land one atop the other is! Who said,"velocity fades, but B.C. goes on forever"?

I have been thinkin about your idea of keeping it period. Why not a 30 newton or something on the lines of a .270 ackley improved, you can ackley any cartridge of the period including the .300 savage which I think would still workin the long action however I would buy the wildcat cartridges I&II combo esdition that you can buy from sinclair, midway, brownells etc. This has a myriad of period cartridges that you could choose from and settle on one that is easy to form and shoot. Why not the 6.5/30-06 or the best of the best 6.5x55swede,the swede in its parent form is a great cartridge and with todays bullets and high ballistic coefficients you cant go wrong with the swede and lapua is making fine brass for it.That is the way I would go period if the 30-06 isnt your fancy or any of its derrivatives.

Hi John ;D

Thanks for your thorough reply. If memory serves correctly, which happens very rarely, P.O. himself said the .257 Roberts was his most effecient wildcat. The Newton was a bit earlier, I believe, but all the others would be great choices for a "big-game" cartridge, but this is to be a varmint rifle.
As one other fellow remarked, the hot .22s are hard on throats and barrels, but also mentioned B.C. as the barometer. Fifty years ago we had nothing from the factories heavier than 63 grains; today it's 75 or 80 grains. Now that is B.C. and from a hot .22 with a fast twist, would fight dog-town winds and win hand downs. (lotta downs in that!)! :o
'Course the easy answer would be a Swift or A.I. Swift. But all you'd save is a few hundred dollars on special dies and ........... ::)
Thanks again for your thought. Will advise what I go with.

Hi Grass,

Thanks for your thoughts. Not sure when the first wildcatter necked down the .244 Remington, but was thinking it was mid-century, though you could be correct.
Can't argue with your perspective, but rather underlines my concept of a hot .22. Fifty years ago all we had from the factories were 63 grain Sierras, if I remember correctly. Now it's 75 or 80!!; now that, through a fast twist tube, is a dog-town wind dominator >:(
As I mentioned to another person, could take the easy road with a Swift or the improved chambering.
Wish I had taken better notes from the person that talked about pillars, in a barreled action attached by three bolts, as a "no-no" :-\
Again, appreciate your input. Puttin' one atop another is a hard argument to beat :D

God Bless
