  1. Fire cracking, what to do?

How can a person get 3000 rounds on a hunting rifle? How many tons of meat has that thing delivered? Just kidding around but once I entered the custom action game my hunting rifles are just that, hunting only. The rifle began as a salesman's sample in 1970 or so, when Remington brought out the...
  2. Need Advice competitive son.

If your son is a part of an organized group like 4-H or similar, the group can put in a grant with your state Friends of NRA/NRA Foundation. They have everything from Anshutz rifles down to basic beginner stuff. Air rifles, 22's, shotguns, even handguns. Ammo, safety gear and more. 70-85% of the...
  3. H1000?

I'd second the RE 33 or you might give Retumbo a try. You could also look at the IMR7977 powder as well. 7977 is very close to, but not the same as, H1000
  4. Fire cracking, what to do?

As others have said, just shoot it. If your rifle shot in, say, the .2's and now it's in the .4's, you might consider one of the options listed earlier - setting it back (if you can) or getting a new barrel. I have a pair of 25-06 hunting rifles, one has more than 3000 rounds and still puts 5...
  5. Dogs who do amazing things

When my lab (named Dos Fiel [basically, second faithful]) was just a few weeks old, she picked me out. Only God knows why. When I got her home, she wanted up on the couch with me. I had to help her 'load-up' on the couch and she would crawl up the cushions and lay behind my head. at 9 months...
  6. When to not waste time with a barrel

Only 5 rounds to bring it back into the .1's and .2's? Easy solution - load 45 rounds. When 40 of those are gone, clean it again and use the last 5 rounds to dirty it up. I have a 25-06 that I ran a cleaning test on last spring. To get it down to bare metal trying all sorts of different...
  7. IMR 4064 or IMR 4166

Tried IMR 4064 and Varget in my 308 hunting rifle. Both had good groups but recoil was a touch more with the varget. 4064 works in a couple of other rifles I have so, I stocked up on it. In short, I have 19 lbs of IMR 4064 to use up and a little less than a pound of 4166. Probably should have...
  8. Three Favorite Deer Cartridges

6.5x55 SE w/ the 142 Nosler ABLR 256 Newton w/ the 129 Nosler ABLR (tie) 25-06 w/ the Nosler 110 AB and the 358 Win with a 200 gr Sierra GK and the 264 WM w/ the Nosler 142 ABLR
  9. GONG advice

+ 1 for Field and Cave. Good folks to work with and buy from.
  10. Anyone loaded for a 256 Newton?

Thanks, Zero. I'd seen a similar QL list like this before. Since I have 2 1 lb canisters of 7828ssc, that's what I ran with. The other list showed a max load of 54 grains and I'm not going there. Started with 50 gr so I have a little room to play with. Pushing a 129 gr ABLR. If I can get a...
  11. Get them started early.

I started teaching this little guy when he was 3 with a Daisy Red Rider popping soda cans on the deck. Moved up to a little Savage 22 by that fall. In November , when he was nearly 5, he shot his first deer with an AR at 60 yards, with his Dad in the stand with him. He's now quite the little...
  12. Anyone loaded for a 256 Newton?

Ok, sorry for the long delay in updating this thread. I got my rifle AND I got my dies. Then, in July, my company truck caught my garage on fire. Luckily, not a total loss on the garage (or the reloading equipment or the gun safe). I worked up a middlin' load of IMR7828 under a 129 gr ABLR, put...
  13. Factory seconds, or "blems"

I've had no problems with Nosler 2nds. Use them in several different cartridges from 223 to 264 WM. With the 264, I've taken it out to 600 with no problems. Mine are all hunting rifles though, might not be the same for someone shooting in competitions.
  14. Load Performance vs Ambient Temperature?

Most likely not. Temperature sensitivity varies based upon the cartridge. And, can even be based upon the lot of the powder. Some powders are more sensitive than others in some cartridges. I noticed many of the Reloader powders are rather sensitive in the cartridges I've tried them in (all in...
  15. .25-06

I have two, both hunting rifles. I'm using 7977 and the 110 AB for 3150 and 3175 fps. Groups are .75 or so with consistency. Haven't messed with the 75 gr pills before though, so, no help there. I used 4831 for years with 120's.
  16. Pay it Forward

Finally got down to pick up my mail and found the rimfire rings from Hogpatrol! I'll PIF with a set of plastic cartridge boxes for SA cartridges. Each holds 20 rounds. Set of 2
  17. "Set Trigger" Canjar - Jard - ?? Others?

I haven't used this rifle for much more than hearing it go off, but, I have a double-set trigger on a Newton Rifle that I really enjoy. Regular pull is about 4 1/2 lbs, set is under one pound. I'm guessing the price of the current crop of triggers and the fact that they are mostly adjustable...
  18. Beginners and Too Much Gun

I went through the phase of heavy-kickers. No more. Do most of my hunting with either a 243, 25-06 or 6.5x55 now. For bigger game, I have a mild-kicking 264 WM and a 308. I have some 'fun' guns that I take to the range to make empty cases to reload, most notably an AR in 5.56 and a Tikka in 223...
  19. 25-06 wby

Have one in 243 that shoots itty-bitty groups (that's a technical term ya know? ;) ). Put 4 90 gr AB inside of a business card at 500. I had a 7mm-08 in the basic grey stock that shot sub-1" consistently. Good guns and well made (by Howa in Japan). Bit on the heavy side and the stocks seem...
  20. Pay it Forward

hogpatrol, you have a PM about the rimfire rings.
