  1. To those naysayers that think raindrops cant affect a bullet-

When I was a tiny little kid I used to put my finger out of the window of my dad's car driving down the road at about 40 mph when raining with vacuum wind shield wipers working (that was a real long time ago, '37 Ford, tiny V8) , the tip of my approximate .338 diameter little finger felt every...
  2. Hope you have yours before time runs out!

Just sort of having fun - starting with nitric acid - the TP is the cellulose ingredient - but not as good as pure cotton.
  3. Just a few facts on flus

Got to chase down the facts and then think. Lots of political agenda out there. I think Donald (POTUS) is performing more than adequately and is improving each day - a combination of concern for individuals and our national economic life. The opposition hates POTUS and will exploit any event to...
  4. Lube for Bolt Locking Lugs

I like marine type wheel bearing grease - water resistant, pleasant smell, intended for high impact surface coatings, and the nice green color provides some indication that surfaces are still coated. I also use it on the bolt cocking surfaces and on the bolt handle root/receiver surface that...
  5. HELP WITH MAUSER TYPE...

All the M98's intended for military use (not commercial) that I have seen have stripper clip slots and thumb cut thus my statement .. "looks like a commercial version of a M98 Mauser". We are looking at this rifle - no thumb slot or stripper clip slot. Nice to know & generally worthy to know...
  6. Last Day of Work...RETIRING

I now can perform real work that is always productive and occasionally pays good.
  7. What's Your Prairie Dog BATTING AVERAGE?

First version of tripod - now much improved, thick aluminum plate added to under plywood and left back corner cut off and heavy vinyl covering on top, and raised edge so stuff won't fall off- used with lead sled or sand bags. If I need to, I can transport the entire works, minus lead sled, a...
  8. HELP WITH MAUSER TYPE...

looks like a commercial version of a 98 Mauser - no thumb slot or stripper clip slot. It appears to have a Timney safety. The reddish shade of the bolt shroud might indicate a nickel steel alloy - possibly from a surplus 98 part. The bolt handle sure looks like my FN Mausers. This might help...
  9. What are you working on this winter?

Stock work, shortening some light recoil rifle stocks so the short-armed Mrs. Fyrewall can use them; also modifying some stocks so they won't bump off my hearing protection muffs - they look sort of funny but work good. Installing Timney triggers on several rifles. Writing some Excel stuff for...
  10. Last Day of Work...RETIRING

I also remember my last day of work. I was a systems analyst and ordered to develop software to track spending including payroll, purchases, and operating expenses for multiple departments. This worked out just great for several years and my software saved over $1 mil from being squandered...
  11. long range groundhog

The tough western rock-chuck is much like a groundhog. I have shot many rock-chucks with a 6.5-06 using 120-140 grain bullets but now have downsized to a quick twist .22-.250 shooting 60-75 bullets. A frequently used load is the 75 .224 ELDM with H4350, IMR4831, or RS Hunter. My feeling is that...
  12. Praire Dog Hunting Why do you shoot them?

Because they are filthy, disease spreading, destructive, and practice cannibalism. Kill the rodents and improve your shooting but practice good hygiene. Don't track poop and body fluids into your motel room, house, or truck. Don't handle the dead creatures and provide a new host for fleas...
  13. magnums for groundhog hunting

I have used both 6.5-06 with 120, 123 bullets with Re23 and 140 gr with H1000 for Rockchucks Some time ago my longest hit was just over 800 yards using a Sierra 140 GK using H4831. But now I like the 120 Hornady ELDM with Re 23. As an excuse to use it, I have shot some with .300 WM using 200...
  14. Lee Collet dies and neck consitency

I asked my smart cousin who has a degree in this stuff (metals) and she got into like plastic deformation vs. elastic deformation. Apparently, when the Lee collet die squashes the neck down to resize it, so bullets are held by neck tension, plastic deformation occurs in that the atoms in the...
  15. lf You Had Just ONE BULLET CHOICE for Prairie Dogs??

Rodent engagements may occur at varying conditions from flat calm to 20 mph winds, from the low 40* to over 100*. After traveling over 400 miles are you going to quit because it is blowing at 20 mph ? - not me. Think of the comparison between the relatively stubby 32 Vmax and the much more...
  16. lf You Had Just ONE BULLET CHOICE for Prairie Dogs??

Calculating the TOF for various velocity differences of 200 to 300 fps at MV's at 3700 to 4100 fps at equal ranges indicates the differences are about .01 second. For this reason I only shoot the fat (thicker) older slow moving rodents.
  17. lf You Had Just ONE BULLET CHOICE for Prairie Dogs??

I need to get another rifle and put more of some other powder in my loads. I can only get 250 fps advantage with 32's over 40's in my 24 inch barrel rifle (3700 vs 3950). In any event, with the 250 fps advantage using 32's the catch up point is about 225 yards - this is with Hornady ballistic...

  19. lf You Had Just ONE BULLET CHOICE for Prairie Dogs??

They (bugs) wuz looking for a new host.
  20. Prarie Dog Hunting?

So much for the drone - a few years ago while shooting at our local range a red tailed hawk (always watching) nailed a hapless mouse only 30-40 feet away from where we were shooting.
