Lathe Spiders

4 Jaw and 8 ga. Copper Wire for the front, No special attachment needed
Barrel can pviot on the round profile of the copper for alignment
The Copper being soft, gives good bite into the barrel without marring the finish

For the rear - Threaded 4 screw Collar
Brass pointed screws, (Same concept as copper but does not need to bite in the rear, only support)

Now for a guy to make a superior awesome attachment for like a D1-4 on the front
(2) sets of 4 screws, spaced about 4 inches apart
So a person could dial in short barrels or even pistol barrels without having to use a rear spider

The benefits of the front spider is it’s significantly shorter than a chuck, you can use it with pivoting V-blocks that hold very well, and there’s no need for sacrificial parts like a copper ring.

I’ve used a spider with 2 sets of 4 set screws and it worked, but wasn’t my favorite thing. I like the idea of having the muzzle end supported with the dual spider setup.

There’s a million ways to skin a cat. This is just one way.
 
I just bought a Yuasa 8” Rotary Indexer for manufacturing the spiders. I plan to make a batch of 12-15 D1-4 spiders initially. The D1-4 seems to be the most common spindle nose on gunsmith size lathes so I’ll start there and see what demand is like.

I also plan to do the D1-5 and D1-6, however material costs are double compared to the D1-4. If the D1-4 spiders are a success then the others will follow.

Price will be around $300-325 for the D1-4 spider. That includes the spider and the cam lock studs and hardware for mounting. As of now, customers will have to source their own set screws for making adjustments to the barrel.

I’m also working on pivoting V-blocks and accompanying radius head set screws. I don’t have a defined price on these yet, but I’ll ballpark them to be $80 for a set of x4 V-blocks and sets screws. I’m working on a way to capture the V-block to the set screw so they’re less hassle to work with when sitting up a barrel.

I’ll continue to update the thread with progress.

Easy-peasy to make, did these a few years ago and never looked back.
I used a 1/4" 90 degree and 1/4" ball end mills.

Groove and cut the blocks (I used aluminum) to length.
Ball end mill to drill out the brass tips, epoxy ball bearings in place.
Ball end mill for corresponding location in back of v-blocks.

Grizzly sells a set of brass tipped screws for their lathes equipped with built in outboard spiders, They are pretty reasonable, I don't know the thread pitch, I am assuming they would be metric.
