Who to use for bluing?

The guy that does our excavation at work gave me seven guns that were in real poor shape. I kept two of them, sold four of.them and the last one i will be getting it refinnished.
It is a old sixteen gauge Winchester model 12 that was his grandfathers first gun.
I dropped it off at a local gun smith to get reblued two years ago and still haven't got it back. I stopped over to his shop and talked to him about getting it done or just give it back.
If i end up just getting it back i will need to take it elseware.
Once it gets done i will hang onto it.
Some day maybe his nephew or another family member might want it back.

I know I'd love to be able to get one on my grandfathers first gun.

The gunsmith i took it to charges $300 for shotguns. 8

Since he got a steal on the price, sell them and with the profit, get shootable rifles and better scopes and have fun. "Too pretty to shoot" is a real problem. I have done that several times and have zero regrets.

Depends on what sort of blue you want. Old firearms were rust blued and in my opinion it was the best. It's not as flashy but it works well. It's hard to do though. Hot salt blue depends on the level of polish you do and the steel. Modern alloy steels will blue different mostly getting a sort of maroon finish. It's hard to control the heat process. Salt blue is nasty. Darn stuff eats clothes, leather and your skin if it gets on it. I did bluing for a time but quit. Good luck on finding someone to do it. I never did enough bluing to merit the mess. It doesn't keep well in the tank and has an affinity for water. You can start out at 294*and before you know it you've boiled out enough steam to raise it to 300* so you have to add water which requires a lot of praying and cussing alternately. When it's cold it'll creep out of the tank over time if not kept well. just some ran-dumb thoughts on it.
