Where is all the Alliant Powder?

It's been forever since I have seen AR-Comp in stock. Same with 2000 MR or RL-15. I have three pounds left of AR-Comp right now, but would buy an 8lbs. jug if I could find it in stock at PV or some place reasonable. It's crazy primers aren't hard to find, but the powder I want is.

You’re about out, and willing to buy one keg, if it was reasonably priced.

In the most respectful way possible, id say that is probably why you are looking right now. When you find something that you like, buy 5 times what you think you want, maybe more. It won’t get cheaper or rot. Stuff comes and goes but always increases in price.

Its been talked about before, but the AI summarizes it better than I can.

Alliant Powder, a brand under Vista Outdoor (and part of the transitioning Kinetic Group/CSG), has
heavily prioritized large military and law enforcement contracts over commercial market sales, leading to significant shortages of canister powder for handloaders.
Key Aspects of Current Alliant Powder Contracts:
  • Supply Chain Suspension: In May 2024, it was reported that Vista Outdoor suspended supply agreements for Alliant Powder canister products (bottled powder for reloaders) for an unknown period due to a worldwide shortage of nitrocellulose.
  • Cancellation of Orders: Vista Outdoor informed distributors they would be canceling outstanding orders for Alliant powder, moving to a model where new orders are handled based on limited availability.
  • Military Prioritization: Due to global demand, production capacity is largely directed toward military contracts, with commercial customers receiving only leftover capacity.
  • Ownership Transition: Vista Outdoor’s sporting products segment (including Alliant and Federal Ammunition) has been in the process of being acquired by the Czechoslovak Group (CSG), which has stated a commitment to supporting American hunters and allied military partners

About 5yr ago when nothing else was available, I got some CFE223 when I couldn't find RL15 or Varget and it has been doing very well for me in both my AR and bolt-gun. Fortunately, I found a 8# jug of it 2yr ago. The folks I shoot with have mostly turned to N140 or N150 since RL15, Varget and the rest are so difficult to find, but I'm staying with CFE223. Good luck finding what you want.

Yes, adapting and evolving.

Wow, and here the one time I had CFE223, I used the last of it for fertilizer.
Worst powder I ever shot!

As for @longbow62 post.
A fairly local gun shop had ARComp last I was there. (About a month ago)
Powder prices there are always higher than everyone else's.
But the ARComp was outrageous!!
$90 a lb.

I'll shoot the heck out of Vihtavouri for $45 a lb!!
And it's readily available.

Federal Gold medal match ammo.

Government contracts.

@longbow62
Not sure what you are using AR-Comp in but I use to use it in my 6br then it became impossible to find. I switched to N-135 and couldn't be happier. Every bit as good and very easy to source and less expensive. I'm switching off of all Alliant powders and when my current supply is gone that will be it for me with Alliant. JMO

  • White River Energetics (WRE): Constructing a new $70 million facility in Des Arc, Arkansas, to produce primers and smokeless propellants by 2026.
This would be Alliant, Military. for the military.
How do you mean 'This would be Alliant,"? WRE isn't owned by Alliant, is it?

Miwall is my supplier whenever possible. They have H4895 which is supposed to be a pretty good alternative to AR-Comp some say.

No, guess not. But the completion date of 2026 was the same?

D&M Holding Company, Inc.- "The holding company itself is owned by its investors, shareholders, or owners, who receive dividends or profits derived from the subsidiaries' performance."

I remember reading a few years back, that Alliant was involved in a new company, manufacturing smokeless powder, for military use?
The name "Alliant" was not used.

Google- "Alliant Techsystems (ATK) historically expanded its smokeless powder manufacturing by utilizing the Radford Army Ammunition Plant (RAAP) in Virginia through the ARMS program in the 1990s, producing commercial and military propellants."

Still looking.

Nitrocellulose comes from other countries. The shortage is causing powder to go to the military first.

I think Alliant powders(& others?) will continue to be unavailable or in short supply, as long as the world is at war?

More Google-

"..the completion date of 2026 was the same" - other than WRE, what else is showing a completion date of 2026?

Yeah, doesn't look like Alliant is an investor in D and M Holdings Inc. From a web search, I'm seeing D and M have a partnership with
DEMCO Holdings a Saudi Arabian defense company specializing in localizing military industrialization, particularly in ammunition, primer, and propellant manufacturing. As of early 2026, they are partnering with D&M Holding to build defense facilities and C Speed for advanced radar technologies, directly aligning with Saudi Vision 2030 objectives.
I would guess that the major part of funding has come from DEMCO.
And, from Chatgpt:
there is no evidence that the gunpowder brand Alliant Powder has any ownership stake or investment in D&M Holding Company, Inc.

Relationship between Alliant and D and M Holding Inc

  • They are in the same industry (ammunition/propellant).
  • But they appear to be independent companieswith different roles:
    • Alliant Powder / Kinetic Group: manufacturer and brand owner.
    • D&M Holding: engineering and infrastructure provider for ammunition and propellant plants.
There are no credible public records indicating:
  • equity ownership
  • joint venture ownership
  • investment stake

    between them.
