I'm doing this Rem 600 project now and thought I'd hang some random pics of it.

It's the OG XP100 cartridge....221 Fireball.

Chad Schmidt happened to have this barrel and dontated it to the project, which is destined for a young shooter interested in predator hunting.

Bases were aligned with the Dan Hackett 'Base Align' (one of the best tools ever ) and then bedded to the receiver. Done this way, you can remove the reinstall the bases and the bases remain in alignment. This is the Picatinny/Weaver underside. The other side is for Davidson/Kelbly/Harrell's 3/8 dovetails. The front screws were faced of a bit as the heads were a bit thick and protruded above the base.

To Dan at whatever rifle range in the Great Beyond he's at now...punching little groups in perfect conditions...thanks so much for a slick tool that I use often! -Al

Hal, I've done it both that way and with the bases loose on the receiver to start with. The bases are bedded to fit the receiver so boths ways give good results.

That's a handy tool that I am going to have to make now..... I have the same situation coming up, needing to get some bases right and have been trying to figure out how I was going to do it. Thanks for the post!

I have had thoughts of a tool like that rattling around in my head for over 2 years! I even drew up a rough sketch.
Now that I see a real one, it has to get made, sooner rather than later.

It's pretty well done at this point. I still need to fit a thin recoil pad and the primary bolt is still away getting some work done. Scope is a Bushnell Custom Gold 6.5-20 (rebadged Weaver Classic V) with a ballistic plex reticle. I pulled the muzzle back to 21.25". Bedded it with Pro Bed, as usual. Trigger is a Shilen BR series for load work. All up weight is right at 7lbs/5 oz.with the 18 oz scope and it balances about an inch ahead of the front action screw.

Cases are prepped and ready to go and there's a goodly supply of BIB 47 gr. BR bullets on short jackets, Lil' Gun, Re7, 1680, N130 and H4198 too.

As soon as the bolt gets back and the weather abides, we'll see what it's got.

Well, I've got to finish the back of it somehow. I've put a couple of these Grind Recoil units on. They're nice to work with and don't have a metal backing spacer to accidentally get into.Maybe I'll go retro and do a brown one.

What was the purpose for the dog leg bolt handle originally on the 600’s?

The 600/660 trigger lever is quite a bit forward from a 700 or Model Seven trigger. Plus, the rear tang is is shorter than a Model Seven. The dog leg made opening the bolt a bit more ergonmic.

Set up with a 700 trigger, like this one is, opening the bolt is even slicker. You just come straight up with your index finger.

The dogleg kept you hand from getting hit during recoil. The magnums kicked like a mule.

I know that they chambered the 600 Rem in other cartridges.

But did anyone else read the title of the thread and hope it was the 350 Rem Mag??
