Really liking Marine Tex

Just popped this out and really liking the Marine Tex. This is my first go with it, will let cure the rest of the night and clean it up tomorrow.
Mixing was straight forward, it’s definitely very stiff and stays where you put it.
Hoping shelf life is better than Devcon, I’ve recently had to throw some away. Can easily get two bedding jobs from a 14oz kit of Marine Tex.

This was the gray kit and darker than what I expected but I’m really pleased.

I’ve been using Marine Tex for at least 10 years….out of same containers. Still working same as when new. Large can of resin and smaller can of hardener. They should really call the “gray” black. I’ve been very pleased with results. Yours turned out great it appears.

Great to hear it last, I worked with it today in my shop at about 68 degrees. High here was 57° but set it out in the sun on a black mat for an hour and it made a big difference. It was very thick, surprised after mixing the catalyst how it smoothed out and thinned up. Will turn the heat up in my shop next time.

It did turn out great, thanks, I'm very pleased.

If it's cold out I sometimes take the can and set in in a small container of water that I heat up in the microwave. I also sometimes use a hair dryer to warm up the stuff when mixing and and before I drop the barreled action into the stock.

I love the stuff but remember when using it--it is Very sensitive to mixing ratio so one strategy is get the small kit from Amazon good n fresh--use the whole batch and get a perfect mix so it hardens correctly
Always just the right amount for one job
Nice job! That will shoot great!
Thanks, yes sir I did a lot of research in before using.

Well hell, I never was one for oprah. By volume is much easier.

Marine-Tex Gray
is a 2-part epoxy putty mixed at a 5:1 ratio (5 parts resin to 1 part hardener by volume). Mix thoroughly on a flat surface until a smooth, creamy, streak-free consistency is achieved. It has a 30-minute pot life at 72°F and cures in 24 hours.
ITW Performance Polymers +3
Key Mixing & Application Tips:
  • Ratio: 5 parts resin to 1 part hardener (by volume).
  • Weight Ratio: If measuring by weight, use 6.3 parts resin to 1 part hardener.

So tell me, what did you use for release agent
When I've bedded the best I've found by recommendation was Johnson Paste wax
I tried other peoples ideas of shoe polish and all that crap and when I went to check it by trying to remove it 6-8 hours later, the epoxy stuck still, not so with Johnsons
---
so how long did you wait before removing the action if you didnt wait 24 hours for it to fully cure?
(Havent used Marine Tex yet except once and my Smith at the time actually did the bedding)
because if you can remove it in 6 or so hours with no Ill affects or sticking, I like that idea.
makes for easier trimming/cleanup when it hasnt fully cured yet

In my experience in the marine trades, Marine Tex used to stick to the tool mixing/spreading it than to anything else! I always found it hard to work with, even in tropical weather. Doesn't really FLOW.
West System epoxy was better, at least for boat stuff.
