I am reloading 9mm with Hornady 147g XTP HP bullets. This bullet has a "boat tail". With a good deburring inside the case, the bullet can just start to go into the case. It seems like it will go in the case OK with the seating die. My question is: do I really need to expand and crimp or can I just seat the bullet without? thanks, Richard

It depends on how much Case Interference you are putting on the bullet . In other words ; Neck Tension . I load both 9mm and .40 cal for my Glock 22 , and do not use any Crimp on my loads , and have never had a problem with bullet / Case issues . I do however set my Cases to a .003 Neck Tension setting . Or .003 under Bullet diameter .

Mostly shooting targets and steel but is also the gun I carry.
With a jacketed bullet, you don't have the same requirements as mentioned with a coated bullet. If you can get it started without any flare, then go for it. Coated/lead bullets require a flare to prevent shaving off the outside diameter of the bullet during seating.
Most expander dies open some portion of the case mouth regardless if you actually impart case mouth flare. If you eliminate the expander die step, you have to account for that increase in bullet neck tension when developing the load as it most likely alter your pressure and resulting bullet velocity. If you are running at or near max with and expander die process and eliminate using the expander die, you could be over max pressure!
Is this on a progressive or single stage loader? You might want a little flare just to eliminate having to hold the bullet all the way up into the seater die when loading. If you are running a single stage, then I get it eliminating a step saves time, just make sure you work up the new process/load properly.

With modern pistol brass you can probably just go ahead and seat the bullet bypassing the neck expander, revolver brass or the Winchester bottleneck brass, 44-40, 38-40, 32-20, etc. you would likely buckle the case.

The bullet just goes into the case ever so slightly but enough that I can set the bullet straight in the case and it'll stay there. When I seat the bullet, it slides in very clean with no sense of binding or shaving. When its seated, it looks perfect. I will be working up loads for my CZ 75 P-01 with multiple barrels, CZ Custom, Barstow Barrels and the CZ factory barrel. I am using a single stage loader, being very meticulous with every round. Looking for the tightest group, 5 shot @25yards. The stock CZ barrel that came with the pistol 4.22" has so far beaten all the others, even the Barstow 5" barrel, bringing in a 7/8" 5 shot group @25yards. Hoping to get one of the (6) barrels to produce about 1/2" @ 25 yards. I am thinking that if I can seat the bullet without expanding and crimping, that is two more steps eliminated as far as not being the same with each reload. You just won't know whether a crimp is needed or not, until you test(crimp or no crimp). For either accuracy or functionality.

Hi, stellar indeed! The 4.22" stock CZ barrel is beating all the other barrels with a 7/8" five shot groups at 25 yards, (see photo), including, believe it or not, the new CZ Shadow 2 TARGET!. I would like to get that down to 1/2 inch with the custom barrels, which is why I am reloading. I would think the custom barrels should at least be as accurate as the stock. Tell me more about the CGW bushing please and thank you for the reply. Richard

and the CZ Shadow 2 TARGET is the 6" barrel! The 4.22" is eating its lunch! Needless to say, I'm quite disappointed in the TARGET.
Well the CGW barrel bushing may not improve your P01 Omega with the accuracy you are already getting. It also doesn't apparently work with threaded barrels. I'm shocked the P01 Omega is better than the Shadow 2 Target! Those are hand fit components on the Target model, hand fit at CZ. I assume everything is tighter on the target model vs the P01 Omega.
It just goes to show there are so many variables that go into shooting consistent and accurate. How the firearm fits you, is one of those variables and I assume the P01 Omega fits like a glove.
