Which grip style? Bisley/standard (Ruger 44mag)

The LGS has gotten a couple of nice like new Ruger Super Blackhawk Hunters in. He has both the standard grip and the Bisley grip. $800 out the door is a touch steep imo, but no shipping, tax, or transfer fee on these makes it more on par. Already have one 44mag and like I really need another but why not. So down to the grip style, which do you prefer and why?

IMO.....for what that's worth, is that ruger royally screwed up their bisley grip frame. Your middle finger is too close to the trigger guard. In the bigger chamberings it tries to break your finger. Freedom arms got it right, with almost a half inch more clearance for your finger.

I have a Blackhawk 45ACP/45Colt and a Super Blackhawk, 44Mag each with the standard grip. The grip is relatively small and not easy to hang onto. Over the years, lots of people said the grip is intended to "roll" in your hand and moderate the recoil. Yes, it does roll in my hand, but it also means I don't shoot them very accurately. Plus the squared off trigger guard on the Super Blackhawk is painful to my middle finger.

I also have a Blackhawk in 44 Special with the BIsley grip. It's a vastly different gun. The grip is handfilling and doesn't roll. It feels more like shooting a 1911. I shoot it far better than the two traditional grip guns.

Of course . . . . YMMV. This is just my experience and opinion. Opinions are like belly buttons . . . .

Since your dealer has both flavors, handle both and see what you like. Flip the muzzle up and pretend they're recoiling. See which grip seems better suited to you.

Id say I have average size hands. He also got in a S&W 500 and matching S&W 460. Bought like 300 guns off one person. Might be the result of all our collections when the time comes.

I have three Blackhawks and have owned a few more, both regular and bisley grip. My preference is the standard Ruger grip frame with a Pachmyer Presentation grip. Preferably an older Pachmyer that is slicker then the recent production. These grips fit my hand and keep my middle finger from banging on the trigger guard.

I also have a FA Model 83 which has their version of the Bisley, in 44 Mag. It is pretty comfortable to shoot.

But the Blackhawks with the Pachmyer feel like a comfortable pair of old slippers. I've used it for so long my hand is trained to it.

I would taske a Bisley over the standard any day of the week
Super blackhawks with the square trigger gaurd is a pain in the regular blackhawk plow grip is to small
I like the hammer on the Bisley better too.

I prefer the Bisley grip over the standard factory Blackhawk grip. It's longer and fills my hand better. I own a 5.5" Bisley in .45 Colt and think it's the best looking gun in my collection.

"Normal grip". The problem with the Bisley grip: you have to look at that goofed up looking POS grip.

Agreed got it anyway. Don't trust the a steady diet of full power loads in my Taurus 44. Why not though. My wife is an enabler. " You better get it before someone else does" even after a $300 heat pump refrigerant refill (leaking piece of crap).

The Pachmayr grips: Is that the one that goofs up the shape and feature of single action grips, turning it into sort of a double action (in your hand)?

I looked at a Freedom Arms with a "Bisley grip". You are not kidding about what Freedom Arms did with that grip. It is so nicely done that for my whole life I never reckonized it as such, and I would own one. You are also correct about another thing. Ruger really "forked up" what they are calling a "Bisley grip".

I pretty much only shoot Single Actions, too.

One of the things Ruger royally forked up on their single action grips (except for most parts of the Super Blackhawk grip) is that they made the Blackhawk grips too short and too deep (front to back) at the bottom end. That's coming from me, a guy with medium sized hands.

You have no sales tax in your state?

Yes, I should have stated that better. That's the out the door price everything included as that's how he prices his used items. If I buy on gunbroker or the likes tax is added to the final price. Those platforms are what I had in mind on that statement.

I like the Bisley grip. I have a hunter with the Bisley grip, but my first .44 Mag Superblackhawk was the regular grip. I have no issues with the bisley grip rapping my knuckles, but I think it is more of result of how I grip. I hated the roll of the plow grip, but I love the push of the Bisley…much more like my bulleye pistols, but with more authority

I really like the .44 Redhawk grips too…a bit more refined and easier to shoot than the Bisley grip.

I like the N frame grips and the Redhawk about equal…but I will say that nothing kicks quite like a 329 PD with heavy hardcast. It is like shooting a single shot by the time I can pull my arms back to earth

Just my opinion, but I’ve killed a lot of deer with all of them. I also don’t load many hot loads for my .44s. I’ve yet to recover a bullet, so I just don’t see the need to load many full tilt, maximum loads.

Lets us know what you ultimately decide, and how you like it once you’ve played with it for awhile.

Edit….I see it already followed you home
