The 22bra Thread

I'm assuming that the primary advantage of the 22BRA (vs a 22BR) is more case capacity = more speed or similar speed with slightly less pressure. Does the 22BRA have any other advantages? How much of an increase in velocity is expected when dealing with the 75gr-88gr crowd? How does it compare to a 22GT? Not trying to stir the pot, pick a fight, or derail the threads topic. Just trying to understand the up side more thoroughly since I'm planning on doing a 22BR soon (hopefully).

improved 40* shoulder over the 22br. which means less case trimming.

a 22gt has even more case capacity, an improved 35* shoulder and plus its turn key... pretty sure alpha makes 22gt brass. (no fireforming)
every case has trade offs, each time your case capacity goes up so does your recoil. as far as case efficiency goes, this thing packs a punch for its size. Me? i love anything based off the 6br case.

I shoot 22bra but I shoot the 22br node. I really don't see any real advantage over the 22br. I do love shooting the 22br node. I suppose the brass will last longer but I'm pretty sure I would be dead on my grave before I wear out Lapua.

Do you think the 22br is more accurate than the 22gt? I like the added speed the GT gives

Ive been shooting both 22BR and 22GT for many years. 22BR is one of my favorite cartridges. Easy to tune, stupid accurate, brass life just like 6BR.

22GT can be just as accurate as 22BR but took more effort/time to find a killer load and tune it for extreme accuracy.

I didn't know if the BRA gave enough additional capacity to get to the next accuracy node with heavier bullets or not. Didn't seem like it would, but its worth asking.

The GT, on the other hand, seems like it might have enough to get to that next node. Then its just a question of whether to use the GT, or step up a little further and go with an XC or Creedmoor case to make sure you have a little extra case capacity to work with if you need it.

People have been loving the 22gt. Both in the shorter freebore and longer freebore. I'm calling it the replacement for the 22-250 with way less powder

The 22br is just a no brainer. It's always been super impressive.

My 22bra with the 150 freebore is just boring to shoot. But like I said, I shoot the 22br node. And my wife and I shoot the 22bra 50 fb in our pdog guns, but again we shoot the 22br node. And that works for sure. A killer.

All good to hear since I already have some 22BR Brass and dies :) I have the optic as well, but I'm still saving up my pennies for the rest of the build. If the tax man doesn't rape me again this year, I might get to actually start buying the gun parts, but I'm not holding my breath.

I really like the 6bra and shoot it more than anything else but I do got an itch for a 22 cal, just not sure wether to go bra or GT. Urbanrifleman makes some strong arguments for a xc too. I just need one of all of them.

what powders do you have on hand? i would base it off of that. who likes to pay for powder these days? $$$
i had 20lbs of powders that would work better in the 22bra than the 22gt. that's how i decided, plus i had a 6bra FL bushing die already....swap bushings and good to go.
*22gt is H4350 and slower burn rates
*22bra is Varget and faster burn rates
*average, depends on what bullet weights you're shooting....and how short your barrel is*

my 22bra eats imr4166 with 75eldm and H322 with 62eldvt

I'm in the process of chambering a 22BRX. I have shot a 6BRX for yrs and want to try the smaller caliber for mid and long range prone matches. Planned to use the Berger 85.5 hybrid bullet but may have to switch to a 90SMK or 90 VLD because of the 1:7 twist barrel. Testing will determine which bullet.

4166 is magical in 22BR! Good thing I have 32lb of it before they stopped selling it. I have found n550 to be best with the 85-90gr pills in my 22GT. H4350 was just ok in my barrel.

Also, to note, i had random flyer issues with my initial 22BR and 22GT barrels that were 7 twist.. I switched both of them to 7.5twist Bartleins and everything shoots just tight knots. Difference of 311,000 rpms vs 288,000rpms..

Generally, you want to be under that 300,000-320,000 rpm range... Just going up from 7 to 7.5twist got me down to 288,000 in 22BR and everything just stacks on top each other... Im now many barrels in 22BR all 7.5 twist after the 1st barrel and all shoot crazy tight without any fuss.

Has anyone tried using Alliant 2000MR powder in the 22BR / 22BRA? I've used it for yrs in 223 with heavy bullets with great success.

If I had it to do over I would probably use either a 7.5 or even an 8 twist with velocity over 3100fps.
