6 x 45 Question

I have a 6 x 45 AR upper that I'm thinking of selling. Is this something that might be of interest here to varmint hunters? I built it for NRA/CMP high-power competition, chambered and assembled by Keystone Accuracy, 24" GM stainless 1:7.5 twist heavy varmint contour, +2" rifle length gas system. I wanted to be able to run 70, 90, and 107 gr., thus the fast twist. It seems the 6 x 45 is mainly used with slower twist barrels and lighter bullets, but I thought I'd ask here.

You might get a coyote hunter here interested in your 6x45 or maybe even a deer hunter. Describe accurately with some pics and a good price and see what happens… I have a 6x45 10 twist bolt gun in my varmint rotation and enjoy it with lighter bullets.

The powder capacity is too low to drive the heavies at reasonable speeds, and I'd guess they won't fit in AR mags. Mine is a bolt gun but I don't run anything heavier than 80s in it. The 6ARC is what you were wanting.

I bought my first 6x45 in AR. It's not great at 2.26" coal. Even tipped 70s were too far in the case. Built a custom bolt gun in same cartridge with long box and it really came alive. Overall, probably the rifle I carry the most. Great cartridge but not in AR format. As above, the ARC is for that.

What bullet are you using in that 6X45 ?

I almost built one for XTC matches but after running the numbers, I didn't see any real advantage to a 223 shooting 70 rdf, 77rdf, or 77 sierra at 2 and 300 mag length, then an 80 something/whatever at 600. I'm currently shooting an 85 RDF loaded long at 600 and it's doing well.

Good to hear from you George!

Have shot about everything made (mass production anyway) from 58-85 gr in it at one time or another, at least to try. It's easy; shoots most everything pretty good... But found the 70s to really be the sweet spot. For a long time I shot the old Berger 69 HBCFB in it. Shoots them like a bench rest rifle (and still have several packs though that bullet has been discontinued) and killed deer and larger varmints very well also. However, it wouldn't open well on crows and the small stuff, just knock them over with little dramatic effect. Switched back and forth winter/summer bullets for a while until I finally decided to just stay with 70gr Blitzking solely. It still shoots those in the .3-.4's but kills fantastic; small critters and large. I know that bullet is considered a varmint bullet but at puny 6x45 velocities (2970 in my 18" barrel) it's plenty for our NC sized deer, when taking and making good shots from solid shooting position. Will also leave a stream of feathers out of a crow. Just a fun do-all rifle. (When not anticipating much more than 300 yards or so)

I've been shooting a 6x45 since the early 90s and built a 6mm-204. The heaviest I shot were 70gr FB target bullets. I have a hard time imaging lobbing 6mm heavies out of the smallest practical case when there are so many available cases that would make better use of heavier bullets. But then I like to see how close i.can get instead of how far I can shoot.

Have been recently considering a similar rifle build for deer and smaller critters here in Pa. Looks like it would get the job done nicely.
