Powder sizes

I'm looking into powders for an AR for general range time. On my short list is H335. 1 pound bottle $42.95, or $171.80 for 4 pounds. Or a 4 pound jug for $148, $37 a pound saving $23.80. I won't be using it too quickly. Am I better off paying the extra $5.95 a pound to have singles or does it keep ok once opened so save the money? Almost certain I know but confirmation is always nice. Thanks.

I am of the opinion that 1-pound bottles are your best option, unless you are going to be using a specific powder consistently.

I bought 4-pound bottles of pistol powder and used it for years and still using some. For some reason I bought an 8-pound container of H110 that will never get used up.

But if you're using it up then that might justify a larger quantity.

Yes, thinking more about my powder craziness and the newest thought. One pound each of 4 different powders (maybe 5 if not too expensive ones) rather than a 4# or 5# jug of one powder. Then I can try more variety and see which my gun prefers. Current candidates are in no particular order:
**TAC
*W748
*BL-C(2)
***H335
Benchmark
**H4895
AA2015
AA2230
* Either/or of the slow powders but not one of each or maybe not either, just in contention
*** Almost definitely one of the picks but not 100% absolute yet
** Strong contenders

I have 8 or 9 223 guns I load for with proven loads of H335. I buy it by the 8 pound jug. I have also bought the one pounders when I see it locally for a fair price. I just like to have a lot of powder stocked up so a shortage doesn’t catch me flat footed. I also like Bl-c2 and CFE223 so I buy that when I see it. I figure I’ll stop buying powder 5 years before I die.

I bought three 8lb jugs of H335 from Bartlett's about 20 years ago when it was $64 per jug +shipping.
I am about halfway thru the 2nd one, have chrono-ed almost every shot and velocity first 5 shots to now is about what a 5-shot string gives me. I bought Mamma a new refrigerator a couple years after that, and use the old one for powder storage. I think there's about 250lbs of powder in there now.

My current plan is 50gr-69gr with mostly 55gr-62gr bullets. I'm partly cheap and partly on an absolutely set monthly income from my 3 sources, fully adequate but not extravagant. So I try to find under $50/lb powders, as under as possible. I'm a fair weather shooter. I doubt I'll be out below 50 degrees or above 80-82 degrees, mostly indoor ranges. But I am going to do some Appleseed clinics in the more temp tolerable months. And will be at the outdoor range for 100yd stands in spring and fall. And haven't loaded a grain yet, still studying and learning. And accumulating for when I do.

I have 8 pounders from over 20 years ago
such as WC 844, That still shoot like a house on fire.
Keep the lid on tight, and only open it briefly to fill yourself a 1 pound empty jug from the big 1
I use an 8 pounder and just fill up a 1 pounder when it gets empty
All my 8 pounders have kept just fine (the Plastic Jugs)
We used to have metal cans, if you have any I would transfer those to plastic
---
FWIW my powder is always kept in the house, 40F-80F temps, and on the other side of the room away from the wood stove
anything within 5 feet of the heater gets major temp fluctuations
the other side doesnt feel that

Need to look at cost per round.
25 grain load, at a savings of $6 a pound saves about .02 per round.

Until you know how much you will be shooting, and which powder, it’s a pretty big risk buying anything but 1 pound cans.

Open jugs of powder are next to worthless for resale. End up with 3 pounds of powder you can’t use or sell, at a savings of .02 per round will take over 6000 rounds to break even. That 6000 rounds would be 20 pounds of powder.

. Hooooow much!
