If I were to build a 25?

Hello all-knowing accurate shooters! I have a question. I have a 25-06 AI that I recently built (haven’t shot yet, waiting on bottom metal). But I’m wanting a short action 25. I’d like to use the heavies. I’m a sucker for the AI’s but not opposed to going standard. I do have 6.5x47 brass that I could use if I go that way but the creedmoor is getting pretty popular. The 250 savage AI seems really attractive to me s well. I’ll be shooting from a 7 twist barrel. I’d like some input, experience, knowledge or thoughts on what cartridge everyone is having the best results with. It’s probably a wash but maybe one outshines the others. What say you? As always, thanks for the input.

What is your intended purpose? PRS, F-Class, Benchrest, NRL Hunter, or just a hunting/steel/fun rig. The 25x47 has certainly found a following in PRS and Benchrest over the last few years, throwing the heavies. 25x47 may be a little light if you want it for NRL Hunter but it's hard to beat the inherent accuracy of that case design.

The original 250-3000 Savage would be neat with a fast twist barrel. Especially if you have a long enough magazine and throat, so the longer bullets don’t eat up too much case capacity. You already have the 25-06 for your high velocity needs. Brass availability is the biggest downside, but not a deal killer.

I don't shoot any competition. Not much going on in this little Idaho town without traveling quite a bit. I enjoy building and shooting what I build. I will also hunt with it for sure.

If I was doing one to just shoot steel and targets for fun or some deer and antelope or other smaller critters I would build the 25x47 since you have brass and it's a great combo. The 25 Creedmoor is nice to but its not realy going to do much more if any than the 25x47 and again you already have brass. If it was going to be used for hunting more I would go the 25 PRC, 6.5 PRC necked down to .25. And all of them would be throated for the heavies.

In a 24-26 inch barrel I would expect somewhere 2700-2825 without pushing it hard. Upper limit is going to be around 2900. Depends on what your barrel likes really. I’ve got a 28 inch barrel that set up for benchrest and I’m finding an accurate area around 2830 with the 133 Bergers. I haven’t taken it up to pressure yet.

Some good info here running the heavy’s

25x47. It easy peasey to load for, easy to tune, mine is itty bitty accurate. Mine is set up for 110s, Randy’s 110s, likes the 110 accubond too. I have enjoyed it enough to build a second one set up for heavies, it’ll be one of the next rifles I build especially with all the new quarter bore bullets coming out.

I think a 250 savage improved would be a lot of fun too. My Dad had one made four decades ago and talked about that rifle a lot, one of the rifles he sold and regretted. When a dad passed I found the reamer Dad had and sent to Zack, hope to build a #1 with it just for sentimental reasons.

I’ve always been a 25-06 fan but never tried the AI version, have fun with that!
