The Journey Begins

Well, I could lead with the joke about how to make a small fortune in gunsmithing...
But it would probably be more helpful if you told the crowd a bit more about yourself...
Hobbyist? Getting an FFL to (hopefully) earn some $$? Machining experience? etc.. etc.. etc..

So I am about to start my journey into gunsmithing, school starts in a week. Any advice? Tips? Words of wisdom?

Hard way to make a living. BTDT.

Buy quality tools, remember this is an exact art & a stubble science.

Be the first one in the shop and the last one to leave. Drive the instructors crazy with intelligent questions. Learn to run the machinery and swing a file. Be a decent welder. Build a few stocks from blanks not semi inlets. If you build any guns for competition, shoot that discipline well enough to know what you're talking about.

Definitely wanting to make it a $$ making job, definitely wanting to get my FFL, some machining experience, 8 year combat Army Vet, lengthy firearms experience with a good solid knowledgeable foundation, I also live in an area that doesn’t have an actual gunsmith. I’ve talked to all the gun shops within almost an hour of me and they all said the same thing, “nobody around here does it, and I get asked a dozen times a week about it” so there is a good need for it in my area.

If you are going to get your license, follow all the rules & keep your paperwork in order. ATF exists for two reasons, to put criminals & gun dealers in jail. Bound books up to date accurately, 4473 executed and filed correct, do not transfer w/o NICS approval (there is a time limit exception if you want to excercise it, that is up to you), NFA firearms have registration papers, repair letters, etc.

Also, remember, you can refuse a sale for any reason, i.e., the management reserves the right to refuse service to anyone. You come in smelling like weed, I don't care how long I have known you, no gun.

Do not play fast and loose with any of the rules, it is not worth it.

I have been an 07/02 for almost 20 years. I have yet to be cited by ATF for any violations, I have been inspected 3 times.
