I have stripped the hex head on the front action screw!!

Hi,

I have stripped the hex head screw head on the front action screw of my MDT ACC Elite chassis. The hex head Allen key just turns when I try to remove it.

Does anyone brighter than me have any ideas on how to remove it. I tried the elastic band trick but that was not successful.

Use a torx bit that is slightly too big to fit into the hole. Hammer it into the screw.

How tight was the screw to strip the hex ?

Using SAE hex key when it should have been a metric? Or vice versa?

I was torquing it to 45 inlb when it slipped. These screws have been in and out quite a few times so I’m sure it is just worn out.

I’m sure there are some inferior made materials in some of the screws too.

Tim have you noticed this happening on factory Tikka screws? My nephew had stripped one on his.

Obvious observation, but.

Monitor your bits and screw heads. Toss either or both and replace when wear is obvious.

Save you problems like this.

That will get you good. Just cause it fits into the recess, doesn't mean it's right!
There are several sizes that cross right over(4mm-5/32", 8mm- 5/16"), some that are close enough to get by in a pinch(1.5mm- 1/16"), and some that just wreak havoc (3mm in a 1/8" recess, 3/16" in a 5mm recess).
This sort of thing is worth learning.

BTW, a 5/32” hex key was used in a 5/32” hex head screw (1/4-28 screw)

I had to drill a pilot hole.

Couldn't you "bed" a slightly smaller hex head wrench in with JB weld.

I used a 5/32” left hand drill bit and a #3 extractor.
