Prairie dogs in Medicine Bow WY

I've made contact with an outfitter for Prairie dogs in Medicine Bow WY. Maybe that's where is headquarters is. Are there Prairie dogs out that way?

Probly. They are everywhere. i have never ventured that far. So can't say. It's all checkerboard with private. I am guessin it may be a private land hunt. I lived in Capser when I was a kid and hunted Shirley Basin, which is /was all BLM and open. I's a ways north of Medicine Bow.

Ive hunted that Medicine Bow country for deer, elk , antelope but I never paid any attention to the prairie dogs. Ibet theyve got em. I was always in the M.B. national forest. Doug

From medicine bow head north to Shirley basin. 487 and left on 77 and watch for towns. Half of 77 is closed during winter but any other time it’s several miles of towns. Didnt go last year but have done a lot of shooting in that area. If you spot the teenage looking game warden out there- ask him where the good spots are for pd. Very helpful and he may take you to sweet spots !

Are you headed back this year Schandler? Stop by and pick me up I'm about 1/2 way for you. That must be a haul from NC?

John i would enjoy the company ! Heck no i have never taken a vehicle to wy. I have buddies that have and share driving time. Always fly into Denver and rent suv. Stay in motel in Laramie.

They really haven’t come back around Shirley Rim since the late eighties/ BF Ferret introduction in the early ‘90’s. There are some, but they are under constant pressure from antelope hunters, et al. Don’t expect to set up and swap out your Heavy bbld rifles for cool down. You might call the biologist in Wheatland to see who needs some help with #’s or who allows shooting.

Have been to centennial many times just to ride around d seeing but no pd towns out that way. Eep the wind LOL. The wind is an always. Never experienced wind here like the wind in Wyoming. First trip i took a shooting stick. Waste of money - so if wind is bad enough take a mat to lay on or if you want to haul table with seat great. I could t hold rifle or crosshairs still enough with stick so i laid on ground on a pad. Worked great but watch for the cactus like plants you can’t see. I’ve had them to go through side of hiking boots into my foot. No tennis shoes bad idea and thick mat. Best shooting for pd was west side of Shirley basin north of medicine bow. Maybe maybe not some private sections but most i believe is blm land. Maybe be some private I’m just not sure. Did not go this fall and things change.

We were antelope hunting private land and the PD towns were unreal. We did all our shooting prone. One of the spots was on a shelf looking down 40ft elevation on the PD town in an old abandoned school house area…. It was one my most memorable hunts to date. Been trying to get enough points for an Elk ever since but it takes about 12…. I’ll be mid 50’s by then. Love Wyoming!!

No need to pay anybody to hunt varmints here. Sure there is someone who has private property but with all the public land you can find a few spots. Carbon county has plenty of land and prairie dogs. Heck I tried to kill every one within 50 miles of Rawlins as a kid.

I was out at my property north of Riner road exit a few years ago and further west on the BLM and didn't see any. I used to clean up on them out that way. 50 mile radius of Rawlings you say, have to check it out.

I was introduced to PDn on the Susan Body Ranch, about 50 miles south of Casper, while antelope hunting in the 80's. Been hooked ever since.

Luckily I brought a HB 22-250 with....it was a great learning experience for wind doping in those Wyoming winds.

I'd never heard of highway wind warnings for semi's and small vehicles before that.

Totally agree, folks were pretty friendly letting us hunt for free! It was a trip of a lifetime! I hope to do it again before my time here on planet earth is done!

Grew up hunting antelope on Riner road. Pop has a massive 16,5 inch goat that halos at the top from there.
