Great minds think alike. Plus, with just a little trimming, they work great on the 17 caliber rifles as well. I tried the "cut up a flannel shirt" route but the time I invested and the inconsistencies in sizing wasn't worth it to me. I don't fault those that do, it just doesn't pan out in my mind. The Pro Shot 1-1/8" square patches work perfectly for .20 & .22 calibers, as long as you use the proper spear-point caliber specific jag. Using the proper jag gives a very nice fit in the bore, and does exactly what you want the patch to do....remove carbon, copper and crud from your bore.
No time wasted cutting up flannel shirts, all patches exactly the same size.
I use Butches 1". But I cut them a bit smaller with scissors.
ProShot offers spear-point jags in calibers from .17 on up. No mods to the jag, no motorized tools needed, just poke one of their patches that come in various sizes on the jag and you're done. The jag/patch combination seals tightly to the bore for the best removal of crud while retaining the solvent very well. Dewey rods, yes, but ProShot gets the nod in relation to jags and patches and their jags fit perfectly on the Dewey rods.As far as sizing, the best way I found to match a patch / jag / bore to obtain a firm fit in the bore is to modify the jag. This is easy to accomplish with Dewey Jag. Simply place the jag in a drill, mount the drill level in a bench vice then polish the jag with fine emery cloth, checking frequently until you obtain the desire diameter.
