Do wind flags help?

Yes, I believe they can help especially when combined with reading mirage. I use orange survey's tape at the range. In the field I attempt to judge it by watching mirage and brush movement.

However, around here (Eastern PA), often the wind swirls and changes direction so it's a challenge. Also, it seems in the last two years the wind has gotten worse around here, even in late summer which in the past would have much fewer windy days.

What I try to do is time the shot during lulls in the wind when varmint hunting and at the range, practicing. This is not ideal, but it can work if you can avoid jerking the trigger while attempting to make a shot before the wind picks up again.

For me, wind is the most significant challenge in shooting precisely. I have yet to master it but keep trying. Flags can help the learning experience if you use them when practicing.

None of us compete (ours is the 'varmint discipline'), but we use wind flags for our colony varmint shooting (ground squirrels), as the wind out here always blows, and the flags really help in judging wind hold-off at anything past 100 yards.

Once the wind value is known, good hits past 300 yards are do-able, not so without the flags, as then we're just 'wingin' it' and hoping for a hit. It really makes a difference. Mine came from Russ Haydon when he still had his shop in WA.....they've been on pd shoots and in use here since 1998.
