Old browning shotgun choke id

Yeah, see how it patterns before you do anything.
This.

Is it an Auto-5? They made 3 million of them so you shouldn't have trouble finding a barrel. You may even still be able to buy a new barrel (I bought one new maybe 15 years ago). It hasn't been that long since they stopped making the (OG) Auto-5...

I believe Modified choke is as tight as you want to go with 00B; I think modified acts like "full" with 00B.

Here is the ID of the choke !
Really hoping that it is atleast a modified !?

I use a Beretta extrema 3 1/2inch for coyote hunting sometimes. Some farmers don't like rifles used. I've shot nothing but a extra full that is 40 thousands and shoot 4 buck through 00 in it with excellent results. Pellet hardness trumps all other variables for good patterns. I shoot trap at a very high competitive level and have done much patterning. Wads, powder and velocity isn't nearly as influential as good quality hard shot. Unless you're shooting steel through that full choke I think you'll be okay. Jmho.

Not full choke, IC.

And please don't shoot steel shot through that pretty shotgun.

The fastest easiest way to check a 12 ga barrel is to see if a dime will go in the barrel. If it won't go it is a full choke. If it does go it is less full choke.
I was just reading through this thread to post this exact suggestion.
The bore of a 12 gauge is .729" (not backbored), and the choke is basically based upon how many points of constriction at the muzzle. A US dime is .705" in diameter, so if the dime will drop through the barrel, it's not a "full choke" barrel. Since your concern was damage from buckshot through a full choke, drop the dime and if it passes, move on to patterning.
As was stated previously, try different loads, with/without buffer, and even the low recoil LEO loads, you'll find each gives a different result. Try different size buckshot too, you may find a smaller size does better at your 30 yard distance. It's not as expensive as testing slugs can get, but if you know you want a certain size pattern at a certain distance, then find the load that gives you that.

I have planned on trying 00 and 000 buck
Wish the gun was a 3in but at 20 or 30 yards it wont matter . Some of our shots in the swamp are close at 10yards but super thick brush down there .
I have a 3in pump 12g . I think the 3 in 00buck has 15 pellets. The 3in 000buck is 10 pellets. Be better suited for on a small open area thay walk through crossing the road . More open and a 30 yards, more pellets little faster

Thank you everyone for your help.I called browning the other day, but never got a return phone call until just now. I am definitely going to run some double and triple buck through it at thirty yards.I'll post a picture when I do

I say test with what you plan to use.
I patterned one using five different 00 bucks. The results were shocking. Some brands and types spread so wildly you could not hit a VW at 30 yds and some brands shot very impressive tight patterns. It is a LOT more about the actual shells sometimes than the choke. The chokes vary so much then add in the shells vary wildly and you get surprised .
Go to the Dollar store buy some cheapo poster board from school supply section , go test. Surprises are a sure bet
